1297, Trolling motor plug...Need some help!

Alright guys, here's the deal, I picked up a 12/24 volt motorguide a while ago and have some questions on wiring it. First of all my boat was set up with a 12 volt system so I needed to go out and get some new wiring. While I was at the boat place I decided to go with some 6 gauge wire since it's suposed to give better power flow to the trolling motor. When I got home though I realized that the plug that i had in the front dash of the boat was only made for a 12 volt system so I had to go searching for a new male and female plug. In my search I can't seem to find a plug that will accept 6 gauge wire! If you guys know of any let me know because I need some help on this one.

Also I dont know if anyone knows of a wiring diagram for a 12/24 volt system but I need one before I can hook stuff up to the battery. If anyone has any help on this one let me know.

Thanks,

Brian....I'm going through the same problem.....I have a plug that I used on my other boat and it has 8 guage wire coming out of it.

I planned on using it but couldn't bring myself to solder 6 guage wire to the 8 guage behind the plug...

Mine is a 12 volt 54lb and it has 8ga. coming out of the trolling motor so I know the 6 is overkill....

Does yours have 6ga or 8????

Here's the wiring diagram for the 12/24 system from motorguide...

http://www.motorguide.com/index.pl/12_volt_and_24_volt

......What kinda boat are you installing it on????....Warren

8 GAUGE WIRE IS COOL UNLESS YOU RUN IT MORE THAN 10 FT IF YOU NEED MORE THAN 10 FT RUN 6 GAUGE TO MOTOR AND WIRE TO THE 8 GAUGE TO IT WILL BE GOOD ALOT BETTER THAN 8 ALL THAT DISTANCE

Hey Warren,
I am installing the motor on a Monark Aluminum 17 ft bassboat. And just a side note to all of you out there. NEVER BUY A MONARK BASSBOAT. They are a total POS!

As for my trolling motor it has 8 guage coming out of it...I'm not so much worried about that as I am about finding a plug for my front dash that will accept 6 gauge wire. I think I found one though at Cabelas. You can check it out at

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0001305010748a&navCount=2&podId=0001305&parentId=cat21380&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat21276&catalogCode=IF&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat21380&hasJS=true

It says it accepts 6 gauge wire so that should help my problem.

The wiring diagram you posted though I'm not sure about. The motor I am installing is a 12/24 volt and I am pretty sure they are wired differently than a straight 24 volt like the wiring diagram on the motorguide site. Please if anyone has any info on that let me know!

God I hate electrical stuff! Uggg:(

Thanks for all the help

Thanks for the info on the Monark....I'll remember that....Is that like a flat bottom john boat style?

I used to have a 12/24 and I believe it hooks up the same way but has a 12or24 switch on the older models and the newer ones just had more thrust if you used 24 volt....

What model is it????
