1575, Got My Own Big Hammer Color & 1’st Report W/Pics

The Boys at Big Hammer have been buggin me to come up with my pro-staff “Signature” color. I wanted it to be a Calico Bass color since that is what I’m really into catching right now.

Introducing “redrum”, that’s murder spelled backwards. It came from the movie “The Shining” with Jack Nicholson. The color is sick and combines all of my favorite Big Hammer colors. The back color is the color of “Sardine” but with gold flake added. That gives it a more bait fish style look. The stripe is bright red. I really wanted a red bait and Big Hammer doesn’t have anything with a red stripe. The belly is clear with red flake which has been on of my favorite colors for years. The combination is awesome and has already produced fish for me.

Now for the first ever “redrum” reports.

Freshwater:

I didn’t really intend “redrum” to be a freshwater bait, but they happened to arrive at the Big Hammer warehouse the day before our 2 day trip up to Lake Nacimiento, so I brought some along. Turns out that the spotties up there were feeding on crawfish. Being a red bait I always figured it would be a good lobster imitation and I never really thought that it would also look like a crawdad.

Our first day at Nacimiento, around mid morning, we pulled up on a nice rocky shoreline with some good sized submerged rocks. Seemed like a good place to give it a try. While I was rigging up a 4 inch, I was verbally harassed by Pete and Brian, telling “you aren’t going to catch anything on that”, “Don’t waste your time” etc. Well I got it rigged and gave it a little shot of “Crawdad” flavored Pro-Cure gel. Tossed it out and let it sink to the bottom. Crank, Crank, BAM! I’m on! First cast! Boated this nice little spottie, while the boys stood in stunned silence!

Saltwater:

Didn’t get a chance to fish the “redrum” in saltwater until last Sunday. Went out with Pete and his nephew to my home water in Goleta. The conditions were slightly better in my honey hole then they were last weekend when I won the tournament, but they still were not great. It took me 3 whole casts to get bit.

The first Calico Bass ever on “redrum”, SWEET!!!!
This time it was on the 5.5 inch.

Pete’s nephew had a 4 inch “redrum” on a spinning rod and on his first cast he nails a bass, his first Calico ever. Unfortunately after getting in the kelp twice, it ended up popping off right at the tube.

Very shortly after sticking my first “redrum Calico, I stuck about a 22 inch white sea bass. Then 2 more good calicos and finished up with a 21 inch flatty. I was stoked that “redrum” not only got bit by the calicos, but also seemed to work great on white sea bass and halibut as well. I’m looking forward to big things from this bait.

Right now “redrum” is only available on a limited basis. Ask for it at your local tackle shop and they should be able to get it for you. If not you can order it online for a short time only at

They are currently available in 4 inch and 5.5 inch.
