What the heck is a butterfly carp? Where are earth are you fishing. Its like you fish in a bunch of urban ponds where those who dont speak english stock fish of all sorts so they can catch them and eat them at will. Odd.

They call the long finned koi butterfly koi so to me the same thing applys to carp.

So technically you dont really know what it is? Kinda looks like a cross between a goldfish and a carp to me. No telling what that thing actually is.
3839, Hey guys.........

Technically speaking, this is a "Cyprinnis Carpio Domesticatus".... or simply, a domesticated Carp, aka Longfinned Koi. It is not a Goldfish (Cyprinnis Cyprinnis) as its body is not deep enough. BTW, although Goldfish and Carp, domesticated or wild, can interbreed, it's not that common, and the offspring are not viable.

Another bit of trivia; When you see one Koi with long fins and bronze coloration, and another with normal fins, but bright color, these are still the same species. The difference is about like that between a Black lab and a Rottweiler, both still Canines.

Peace,
Fish

They WILL pull your string and the fight can last a while when you get a big one one. I catch alot of them in the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. A few years ago ,I was fishing in downtown Chicago, on the river, and I hooked a 22 pounder(had a scale w/ me) on a grub, 30 people were on a bridge overlooking the river and watched me land it. The applause was loud!! THAT was FUN!! (I also hooked a goose when it swam across my line before I could reel it all the way in. MAN WHAT A RUCKUS!! He was fine when I cooked him...(naw, I let him go). About 3 months ago, I was bass fishing in the river, and pulled my full/large size black Strike King'WILD THANG" over a branch, and ......WHAMMO!! I set the hook, it takes off like a rocket, then jumps out of the water. Thaaaaaat's when I found out a 12 pound carp had HAMMERED that wild thang.A great fight. It ATE the bait(there are ALOT of BIG crawdads in the river) and the 4/0 Gami EWG, not just snagged it. I do have a picture, but, unless you all BEG me to post it, I won't!! LOL ... I would have preferred a 12 pound bass though...... Set the hook RFN!- ALEX

Urban I am pretty sure its not a cross I in the summer when the carp are all over the surface in the delta I see one or 2 now and then. This is the second one I have cought the other was in the 3lb range I know teh butterfly koi look just like them but more colorful seeing its a closely related fish I would assume its pretty much a long finned carp or butterfly. Anyhow check with you buddies I know you have a way of finding out forsure mabey I cought the record!

I have cought carp upto 35lbs in the delta but that was on tuna gear. I would prefer a 10lber on 4lb anyday.

Urban here is a pic of a butterfly koi read the article

"That trait is the long, flowing butterfly fins. Purists believe the long fins of the butterfly koi take away from the breed. In reality the long fins come from another type of carp that is common in Indonesia that has been bred with “regular koi”"

Mabey its just a weird type of carp
