Today I went to Lopez for a change of scenery and just to check out the lake. I was surprised to find an
algae bloom at the lake and basically the whole thing was pea green with 3 foot visibility. I started out by the
marina on foot throwing a zipper worm and the ac minnow. No luck for me there. I saw some crawdads in
the shallow water which I suppose was a good sign but the only action observed was two trout caught on
powerbait. Next I drove up the lake towards the back of the cove past the swimming area. Shallow water
there and I mostly threw the minnow but no luck there either. Finally, as the wind kicked up to about 30
knots, I tried some of the big shaly points. Well, surprise no luck there either and I mostly threw a rattle trap.
In a side cove I saw a bunch of shad cruising around so in desperation I snagged a couple on a treble hook
and baited them up. The result, one 10 inch bass with no upper lip. Weird looking sucker. After that I just
gave up. One note, I stopped by the tackle store in Arroyo Grande called Wilderness Outfitters. They have an
excellent selection of serious bass fishing gear. I saw a lot of the stuff you don't see in Bass Pro or Cabelas at
good prices. Check it out sometime if you're in the area.
