7497, Yucaipa Regional Park 12-30-02

I got off of work early, so I thought I would get one last day out of my license. I got to Yucaipa around 1, and I was pulling up I met Mike, the owner of P.C. Jigs, who was just leaving. We talked for a few minutes, and gave me some of his new colors to try. Thanks MIKE!

I went right down to the bottom lake, and fished a few different colors of jigs, for a few bites, but nothing solid. There was a few guys getting them on bait, but still nothing that was consistent.

I thought one of the other lakes might be better, but I was wrong. The middle lake was so murky, I made a few casts in selected spots, but just on my way to the top lake. The top lake was clear, but no one was catching any fish here. This lake is a great one to fish on a Friday, but the weekend anglers kill the fish, with it getting the most pressure.

On my way back down to the bottom, I spotted a nice 3 pound trout in the spillway of the middle lake, but the fish wouldn't hit anything. As I went back down to the bottom, I thought I'd spend the rest of the day by the lone tree by the dam. I tied on a pearl mini-jig and when I got to that area, there was a few trout boiling on the surface. I finally got my first trout right about 4:30, and got two more before they kicked off the lake at five.

All in all it was a fun day even though I only got 3 small trout, with the biggest a pound and a half. One thing I really don't like about Yucaipa is the rangers. They come around the lake at 4:40 telling you the lake is now closed, even though they close at 5. This park has just gone downhill over the past couple years, as far as service goes, and the size of the fish stocked. The only time I fish it now, is when I have no other choices, or it's right after work.
