1014, The ponds, 3-15-01

Fished 2 hours tonight. Started w/ the zipper, but gave up quick. Went to the Puppy, and worked it for a good hour+. Finally got one 11" while trying quicker retrieve. This seemed to be the right approach, I guess they weren't in a slow mood tonight. The next couple casts after that 11" I watched the Puppy get poked at a couple times each cast. It was kinda funny, all of a sudden it would just jump out of the water maybe an inch. But, this game was quickly ended when a solid tree stole my one and only Puppy. So, I went to a black and blue buzzbait for no takers. Finally headed home around midnight. Any suggestions for working the buzz?

Ed,
The only thing about buzzbaits is to make sure they stay on top of the water. You want to engage the reel before the lure hits the water so that you can start reeling right when it hits. Other than that, vary the speed. Sometimes they like it fast, sometimes they like the blades barely spinning. Try the slow wind first and if that isn't workin, speed it up a bit.

This the time of year that the males start to protect the females so the females can spawn. The smaller the body of water the quicker it warms up,thats why the fish were slapping your puppy.(that doesnt sound right, har)The fish are not really in a feeding mode once they start to pare up for the spawn, most of the time they will just hit a lure but not open there mouth to eat it.Next time try a dark colored Senko in 6" and just dead stick it,you should get the bigger females to hit it.

As far as the buzzbait goes, that bite wont get really good till post spawn, but you might get a few during pre spawn.Like Brian said keep it on the surface and change you retreive after each cast.
