16478, Delta Tides - the easier way
Posted by swimbait, Mon Sep-25-06 08:55 AM
I've been pondering a good way to determine what the tides are on the Delta. Most people say that this link has the best tide tables:

http://www.californiadelta.org/deltatides.htm

The problem for me is that I don't know where 90% of the locations on that page are.

So, rather conveniently, on each tide prediction page they give a lat/long for where the tide is being predicted.

I punched that data into google earth and made myself a much more convenient tide predictor. Each mark in google earth has a link that you can click on to open a browser window in the lower half of the google earth screen. Now I can go to the area of the delta I want to see tides for, click on the mark and see the tide prediction.

Want it? Right click on this link below and click on 'save link as' then save the file to your computer.

Here's how to use it from there:

1. Download and install google earth if you don't already have it. Here is the link:

http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html

2. Open google earth

3. Click on File -> Open. Browse to the delta_tides_9-21-06.kmz file and click OK

This will load the placemarks in to google earth to a folder called Temporary Places. Now you can click on them to go to them, or just zoom in to where the delta is on the map and click the green icons from there.

Clicking on the name of the placemark will take you to that location on the map and show you a link that you can click on to get the tide for that spot.

4. To save them permanently in google earth, drag the delta tides folder up to your My Places. Or, when you close google earth it will ask you if you want to save your temporary places and you can answer yes.
