219, bored on a sunday afternoon

well, being bored on this beautiful day, i decided to haul my ass over to lake los carneros for some bass catching fun. to tell you the truth i was expecting not to catch anything, but i'd rather not be catching any fish on a lake than on my couch. Well, i started out flipping a brown arkie jig. no luck. i flipped about half the lake (it's a really small lake, so it's perfect for float tubing). as the sun started to go down, i decided, what the hell, and i threw a buzzbait. within ten casts, WHAM fish on! this fish totally unloaded on that buzzbait. big old splash, water everywhere, it was great. it was just a sudden slam, no pussy footin around. so i set on him, and got him to the float tube to discover a solid 3 pounder. that fish would've been 2 pounds anywhere else, but it was so fat and healthy. i threw the buzzbait a little bit more, but no more fish. i think that one fish made it worth it though, there's nothin better than getting totally slammed on by a good sized fish on topwater. the water was stained, about 4 foot visibility, pretty cold, and totally glassy on the surface (which is suprising that the buzzbait worked). oh yeah, and i've had enough of my corsair. it started a new noise today, and now turning the handle is like all jerky and loose, and it hardly ever engages. that things going back to shimano.

hey,<BR> yeah, that was my first time fishing there in a while. i fished it once or twice when i was kid, but not recently. um, i think the fish are feeding mainly on small baitfish. there were a lot of cranes and herons around, so i think their hunting small fish, i also saw a small school of shad jump out of the water. my first thought was that they're feeding on crawdads, but i'm wrong. i think poppers would be productive at dusk. also, i think these fish are way back up in the tullies and timber. flipping a brush hog way back in there might pay off, but i think shad imitating baits are your best bet. spinnerbait, maybe, there's not much structure to fish spinnerbaits with in that lake. i'll be back either during the week after school, or next weekend, so i'll put up a post on how it goes. if the water was more clear i'd throw a castaic threadfin. i think the gizzard shad is too big for the size of fish they're feeding on. i'm still trying to figure out what's up with carneros, so maybe in a few more trips i'll have an idea of whether it's for real or not. we'll see, maybe i'll go out tomorrow, if i don't have too much homework. later.
