I'm launching my Kickboat from the peir at about Sun-up. Last monday I farmed 2 legal Hali's and a rockfish and landed 1 short ling and 1 short Hali. If you drive on the peir, remember it's 3 mph. You can launch from the floating dock at the end or over the sand next to the peir. I'll show you where to park free with a hike or you can feed a meter. If you want to RSVP, call me at 408 778-7410 and leave a message.
Tight lines,
Wade

I went on 9/2 and again on 9/5. On 9/2 I launched off the dock at 7 and fished around the moored boats for an hour for nothing on 1oz. heads and 5" powerbait swimbaits. Then I hit the small kelp bed closest to the NW side of the kelp area for another hour again for nothing. After that I went out to the 1Mile bouy (I think), I broke out the frozen squid and was promptly broken off twice. (Note: don't try using 10# line in 50+' of kelp. For the next 3 and a half hours I would drift into a new section of kelp, drop a bait and either get broken off or pull up a rockfish from 10 to 18". Once I got 5 in the 15 to 18" range, I decided to try for Hali's.
I put the swimbait back on and headed a bit shallower (40 to 50'). I felt like I kicked my legs off trying to find where they were for the next 4 hours. I got tons of bites from Kingfish and I got raked twice by Hali's or something else with real teeth, but I didn't hook either Hali. Finally a guy I had talked to in the AM came by and asked what I was doing out so deep, as he held up 2 Hali's well over legal. I took the hint and headed in to water under 20'. After a little while I got hit but again it only raked the swim baits tail. I decided to try a smaller bait and started catching every little fish around except Hali's. I went back to the bigger bait and added a stinger hook. Ten casts later I hooked up BIG! After a long hard fight I got the Hali up where I could see it and it was HUGE! The hook looked well placed and so I fought it some more and then tried to net it. When it's head hit the bottom of the net, the widest part of the body was still out of the net. That's when it went nuts! The hook snagged up in the net and the fish was thrashing enough to scare me about popping my Kickboat. I plunged the net deep into the water and and after it was almost wrenched from my hand, I pulled it back up with the swimbait still stuck in the net, the line broke, and the biggest Hali I've ever seen in real life gone.
Tight lines,
Wade

P.S. The 9/5 trip was kind of anti-climactic with only 4 13-14" rockfish kept, and a rod broken when a Ling shot out from under my kick to grab a small rockfish at the surface.
10751, Albie's?
