I have the Shimano Stradic 4000 and it is beyond awesome. I think it runs around $100 but the next two models down are good also (I think they range from around $60 - $80).

If you are going to be using a spinning reel in the surf the customer service reputation of the company should be very high on your requirements list. No matter how good the reel is it will get messed up in the surf. Shimano's customer service is top-notch - far superior to any other reel company I have dealt with and/or heard about.

Hi, concur with the above. I have a 2500 size Stradic that I fish 6# on and it is nice. It has anti-rust bearings. I think they have just added ARBs to some other models that cost a bit less, you'll have to look at Shimano's website charts to see which ones. Their service dept. is great.

I highly recommend the Shimano Sahara. Its only like $55-60, casts great, and has almost every single feature that the more expensive models have. I've used it in the surf for the last 18 months and have had no problems whatsoever. I use the 2000 model, but if I had to do it again, I'd get the next size up to reduce the line twist.

I have the Sahara too and it's great at a reasonable price. Wash it after every trip and oil lightly every 8-10 trips or so and it'll stay great. Remember that sand mixed with saltwater is the worst thing for any reel, so it goes without saying that you should never let your reel touch sand if you can help it.
Tight lines,
