12663, 1 1/2 Day Charter Advice????
Posted by joshik, Wed Aug-25-04 12:47 AM
Hi! I am a local weekend warrior off of 22nd street. Ive been fishing twilight and 1/2 days forever now... 3-4/week. So i got that down pretty good :)

Now its time to step up. Im going on my first long range out of 22nd Street on Sept 20. We will be going for yellows, blue fin, and yellowfin and whatever else is out there at Cortez Banks. So my question is what kinda rigs do you guys recommend.

I have Calstar 800L 25lb jig stick with torium 16 i can use for yellows on 25lb. Someone recommended that i get a 30lb rig and a 40lb 2speed rig.

What do you guys think? I have a penn 500 im accutizing and from posts on this board, would be good for 30lb. I could use that for jig or live bait right?

for a 40lb 2speed, i was looking at the Shimano TLD 20 2sp, or the Avet EX 2speed.

Im probably gonna go with Seeker black steel blanks coz i get hookups on seeker.

Any and all advice tackle or ne tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I agree with Wils. Especially if you guys are on the shallower portions of the bank. I have landed 15-18# yellows there on 15-20# but those are smaller grade and the bite was tough otherwise I would have gone heavier. If they'll eat the 30-40# that's in your favor. You will love the extra fishing time on a 1.5 day. Have fun.

thanks for the advice!!! yeh, ppl have been telling me to get 30-40. do you think a 2sp is necessary? they said they would be going for bluefin too.

i cant wait! im having 2 Seeker CJBF70's. im ditching the accutized penn 500 coz for the price i could get a new torium 20 and fish 30lb on there.

If you're planning on doing more 1 1/2 to 2 day trips and have extra $$$ I would get the shimano tld-20 2 speed. That's a solid reel and pretty much a staple on extended trips. You'll be glad you have the 2 speed when you're hanging a nice blue and bring it to deep color. Just pop that baby in low gear & winch that bad boy in!

good idea on reel choice. (a 2-speed is nice if you can afford one) the 500 is fine in open water albie fishing, but the shallow water at the cortez over rocks & kelp demands a better drag system. On a 1 1/2 day, your drags WILL get tired in the afternoon if the yellows are biting all day.

Line capacity will only come into play due to lost fish. But what a thing to worry about. :)
bring along a back-up reel if you have one. load it with 40#. If you need it, it will be because the fish dont care what they're biting. :) :)

and flourocarbon! what a difference a 4' leader makes. I was sold on it this year.

PS: re-tie your hook after every fish. good luck and report back.

ive ordered the avet ex 2 speed for my 40lb rod. might as well get the 2sp now and then i can have it when i start doing longer trips and all. so now i have the 25lb on tor16, 30 on tor20, and 40 on avet ex4/02. fluorocarbon has been a big thing everyone has mentioned and imma bring tons of it :) im going to try to jig most of the day. i'll throw bait but my fav is to jig. my friend went a few weeks ago to cortez and threw megabaits all day and landed 11/16. Another guy was landing them on tady 45's and salas 6xjr heavy. Cant wait and ill have pics and a report! :)

keep the advice a'coming! :)

THANKS!
