I fished Haskell’s on Sunday March 8 2009,

On Thursday I went to the Fred hall show, I had a great time and saw some cool stuff. I have been thinking about fishing from my kayak more this spring. One of the highlights of the show was stopping by the big hammer booth and asking questions about colors and techniques used for fishing the kelp beds from my Kayak. I met Brian and he picked out some swim bait size and colors for me, we talked about different areas to fish in Goleta etc. they were really helpful and got me motivated to get out on the water.

Sunday I launched at Haskell’s around noon, I wasn’t expecting much as it was a –1.1 tide at 1:30 PM. I paddled out through the ankle high surf , the current was ripping up coast, and I got to an area Brian mentioned at the show. I dropped a 5” calico hunter on a ¾ ounce lead head, as soon as it got to the bottom, I get hit and land an 18” Calico, with a another of the same size chasing it up to the surface. Unfortunately that was it for the day, the current slowed down as it got closer to low tide.

It felt good to get out on the water again even for a short trip.

Cheers,
Matt W
