5579, Don't ever try this

I barnied a really nice legal flattie today at the north basin of Oceanside Harbor. I was fishing the outgoing tide with an assortment of 4" swimbaits that I had purchased the week before.

My method was a slow steady retrive and occationally letting it bounce off the bottom. My outfit is a freshwater Shimano Sonora 4000F and a light taper 9' spinning rod. On the spool I just recently loaded 8lb test spiderline because I like its low memory and overall toughness around rocks and other obstructions.

On the third cast of the day, I hooked up with what was to be about a 26" Halibut which fought his asse off. He made about 3 to 4 runs before I was able to get him up close to the rocks where I could land him. I reached over and grabbed my line, having complete confidence in its strength, and attempted to lift him out of the water and onto the surface when...pop! Bye bye Halibut, swimbait, and christian vocabulary! Moral of the story is ... although spiderline is strong, it doesnt stretch and absosb shock like mono does so please be aware of that when trying to beach that keeper.

Tan your hide in Oceanside!
