Surf sucked so i decided to give freshwater a rest and try surf fishing.....i went down to Strands with my 5 and a half foot spinning rod not knowing anyhting about surf fishing becasue ive never gone. im good at bass fishing so why not try this i thought. i used some redish colored AA's and just casted into the surf and experimented....after ten minutes i felt i was fishing in a pool cause the method i was using sucked. i decided to slow it down and just fish slow.......first cast....first fish.....it was a 12 inch perch......for the next hour i caught over 10 fish in the same spot then left.....it was super fun and im going to try it again.
does anyone know what else i could catch out there from the beach? let me know what and how.....thanks

I'm assuming you're talking about Dana Strands. From shore mostly perch, corbina, the occasional butt or leopard. Good job on the perch!

What should i use for corbina? plastic wise. and are perch good fried......if so whats the legal size limit

Sandcrabs are best for corbina, although mussels and squid sometimes work. I've heard perch are great fried, and there is no size limit on perch. (I believe) Also, a good bait I find for perch are store bought shrimp. Just put on a couple size 6 or 8 hooks throw on some pieces of small shrimp, and you're likely to get somethin on the first cast.

I agree with what you said, but I have NEVER caught corbina on squid. I usually only use sandcrabs for them (mussel, bloodworms,and ghost shrimp supposedly work too). You are sure right though on the store bought shrimp...it works great on the perch...much better than squid!

Perch: Redtails have a 10" Min size limit I think all others no size limit, bag is 10 total any species. Lures to use are grubs up to
2-1/2", spoons, spinners, stickbaits, etc. all under 3-1/2". Baits to use are Mussels(A1+*), sandcrabs, store shrimp, ghostshrimp, cut anchovies, squid, etc. on a #10 to 4 hook. 4-8# line recommended
Corbina:(I don't know as much about these since we don't see them this far north) Size & bag limits I don't know, lures are the same as for perch but go up in size to 5" with 3 to 3.5" about the best, and don't expect a lot of them on lures. Bait, use the same as for perch minus the anchovies and squid. 4-8# line reccommended
Halibut: (A personal Fave.) Check the regs for your area and expect to see a Warden at any time. Lures: SWIMBAITS 3-6", grubs, stickbaits, spoons, plastic worms, hair jigs, etc. mostly in the 3.5 to 5" size range. You'll do best with lures near the bottom. Bait: Live minnows of any kind 3-6", occasionally mussels, rarely on dead bait. 6-15# line reccomended.
Leopard Sharks: (1) 36+" a day, Lures: rarely productive, use same as for Hali's. Bait: anything live or reasonably fresh dead or fresh frozen. 10-20# line reccomended.

yea.....what strands are you talking about? i dont know about the fish but the girls are mostly good looking down near the point and the surf can be insane on high tide......but hey it sucks

take it from me, Strands is a terrible place- never go there, tell all your friends never to go there, this place is poison. Go right to T-street for the best fishing and surf in Orange County. I think the 91 OCTD bus will take you right to the spot!

ha yea go to tstreet or somewhere south. ive never seen a worse or trashy wave then strands.......tell everyone......parking is too expensive also

That is funny Chris! Looks like T-Street is the place to be (especially for the MV and AV residents)! They could go to Doheny too...some killer barrels there!

Todd, I kid you not, scored epic bowls at the rivermouth at Doheney a few years back when tons of rain stacked a killer bar out there. Not sure how the swell found its way in, as it was winter, but there were epic barrels for a week or so. I think the magazines even ran a pic of Pat O'Connell getting slotted on the right, there was a sick left, too! First and last time I saw that place go like that!!!

Hey Chris, Normally Doho is pretty fickle (good for longboarding if some large swell gets through), but if that rivermouth sandbar is just right, then there really could be some fun barrels there! I think I remember those pics in Surfer mag a few years ago...looked good too!
