Been reading a lot about the makos and thershers off Np. One report in the WON stated that the anglers trolled a rapala for a 243 thresh! Any tips on locating these fish? water temp, birds etc? please help!

Trolled a purple/black rapalla, pink/white baitomatic for 4hr all thru newport/laguna Sun morning/afternoon to no avail, although we heard it was "wide open" from a local guru. Makos are in Dana/backside of Catalina, threshers are from newport to oceanside, 3-5 mi from the coastline.

Troll near canyon edges with a live mack pinned on a circle hook at the end of an 8-10' 80# mono leader. As always look for birds and bait and the fish will be nearby. That's how we do it from a kayak at least. Live bait makes for easier CnR as rapalas are much more likely to tail hook a thresher. I don't mess with makos from a kayak, hence the mono leader.
