6646, Just back from Cabo
Posted by zacharooni, Thu Jun-27-02 08:28 AM
Well I spent the last week in Cabo and wish I had good news. I went out 3 days and managed 1 roosterfish. The only boats catching any fish at all are the ones who can go pretty far out and find the warm water. I go to Cabo around this time every year and this is the coldest the water I have ever seen during this time of year(mid 50's). A funny story, well seeing that I stayed at Plaza Las Glorias and had a perfect view of the new gas dock I would spend my afternoons watching all of the fishing boats coming in dropping people off than refueling. It was so funny some of the boats would come in with 0 flags and leave with 4 after gassing up. I knew this happend on some boats but I guess when the fishing is this slow they do it even more and more. I just made me so mad x( They charge these people including me tons of money for these charters and they totally lie to people. Maybe I am just a little bitter because I spent $900 over 3 days to watch someone else reel in a roosterfish either way if you are going down wait till the water warms up a bit. I probably talked to people from 15 boats over the week and none of them had more than 2 fish and 60% of them were skunked. Like I said before the Pangas werent coming back with anything and a total waste of money in my view. The Dorado bite was the hottest if you call it that. I did talk to a guy in the airport when I left who fished in Laredo for the week and killed em. Striped Marlin, YFT, Dorado. I guess I picked the wrong week at the wrong place. Sure makes you cherish the other trips of years past....

I went to cabo a few times...last year around this time, got skunked (got a half refund since we didnt fish the 2nd day)...crappy conditions and cold water like you. About 4 years ago (my first time down there) we got dorado and sailfish...I had a blast! Hope you have better luck next time!

That's really weird! If you look at the satellite data on SST's, you'd have to say that an El Nino is brewing. Red crabs, Saior's jellyfish?? WTF??? What's up with all of the cold water??

I'm heading down to Mexico soon, I hope things warm up. When the water is cool at the Cape, you can catch Swordfish on the bottom at the Gorda Bank, and there are lots of T-Sharks. Youn can also catch the bottom fish down there when the water is too cold.

Jon, that's a cool pic of the grouper!

How old is that pic? Judging by the board shorts I'd say about '80? ;-)

Heh he....

Yep, that pic was taken in 1985, at the peak of my 2nd round of fish-craziness...

:-P

Since the 90's my time on the water has been diminishing year after year. Sportfishing is a dying sport. It is very depressing... Landings all up and down the coast are going broke, and basically, there is little to get excited about.

Maybe the impending El Nino will wake things up again...

Yeah everyone down there was talking about the Tropical Storm brewing off the coast which should help to warm things up a bit. Hopefully it will turn around soon. Swordfish huh? I never thought about that.. What is the normal water temp for Swordfish? I thought they were liked REALLY cold water? What do they normally fish with for Swordfish? Is it trolling or just dropping a bait down? Obviously I have never been. Oh yeah, that is a nice picture of the grouper that thing is huge its like 10 times longer than your shorts :-)

Actually, swordfish used to be a fairly common catch in the springtime at the Cape, when the water is cold and green. In 1972 I caught one on rod and reel, and so did my Dad. We would fish on the bottom out at the banks with Caballitos and lots of lead.

When you catch a broadbill when you are only 11 years old, the only way to go is down...

Dang! Take a look at the latest SST anamoly chart. Look how cold the water is (relative to the average) around the Cape and the West Coast...

So much for this being an El Nino summer... :-(
