hey i know this isnt saltwater fishing.....but its salt water surfing. i figured a few of you may surf or at least may observe the surf when surf fishing. im going up to El Capitan Beach for tomorrow and thursday and i was wondering if anyone of you might live up there and know what its like. Are there any waves right now up there? i know the spot is finicky but are there any places within walking distance? well if you dont have a clue.....should i at least bring a rod? thanks alot

Don't bother with trying to surf El Cap in the summer unless there is a monster new zeland angle south. Keep driving to Jalama and you might find more then you can handle.

Swell hasn't materialized much yet as of Tuesday night...hopefully it will be better tomorrow! Supposedly the swell direction is too steep to ideally hit south OC, but north OC may be firing! Good luck with the surfing and/or fishing!

I saw some south coming through last night at Goleta Beach, but not very big and if it is steep from the South forget El Cap. A huge New Zealand will produce ridable surf but it usually isn't very bowling even then. Jalama picks up the steep south stuff and you might think you were transported to Puerto Escondido with super sick, spitting, heaving slabs.

Surf was about 4 to 6 with the occasional 8 footer. A bit inconsistent, but glassy and very clean! Got a lot of fun waves. Best one was at least 100 yards...lined up great..even almost made the closeout shorebreak till the lip hit me on the back on the beach. FUN surfing! Please be careful if surffishing or fishing from rocks!

Went to Newport at lunch, w/ a couple others from work. Just a look see, but what a see. That south was firing. Morning report had it at triple OH. It was was still close at 1pm. Wind was on it a little, ruining some of the ok sets. But people were still getting some sick barrels. Watched one guy disappear into what we though was a deadend. It wasn't, and everyone on the beach was screaming. We had the digital, so I'll try and post a couple. Though keep in mind, the camera has a 3 -6 second delay before firing, so the good shots were rare.

That second one is the best...nice drop! Saw some of the Wedge footage on the news...looked like it was firing there too!

Another good one on the way, southern hemi style, supposed to fill in Sunday- bummed I missed the hurricane swell, even doho was looking very fun, some of the south county points that like the 180 looked sick. If anyone is around OC you might want to take a walk down to lowers, the top 44 will be KILLING it the next few days- just don't do what my buddy did today, he ate it skating down the path!! He is fine, pretty classic, he has some nice burns from the path though. Keep your eyes off the nubile young hotties when skating at high speed!! Thanks for the pics, Ed, heard 18th street was off it's face yesterday. Damn, I never used to miss a swell!!!!

I'm sure Bowlboy has the inside track on El Cap, only been there when it's flat, but I guess on a really big NW the place is all time, one of the best rights on the coast, rare though. I've seen a couple pics that made my jaw drop.

Point was definitely all-time. Pics were taken about 10yds south of the 18th St. tower.

Hotties on the trail, classic. I missed the turn once because I slid when I leaned into the turn. Ate weeds pretty good.

BTW Chris, I'm back up here in OC now, so let's meet up soon.

It can be insane when the swell and tide is right, if you like triple in and outs and 200 yard long rides. Check it when there is a big NW with plenty of west in it. Since SB gets basically blocked by the channel islands to the south and by point conception to the north, the angel has to be right. The swell can be huge from the north and it won't even be breaking, but throw some west in and oh baby. Didn't get a chance to look at it during this one but there could have been something there. It really doesn't barrel good on any south, it's really only a winter time place. But don't tell anyone!

P.S. tried for more WSB last night, but no action.

I heard that another one is supposed to hit too. Sean Collins said it should hit Tuesday but maybe earlier?...only time will tell. I was talking to a guy out at Creek and he said Doheny was breaking out at 2nd reef again a few days ago. I had fun at Creek, but unfortunately, got a sore throat now...hopefully it is not from the contaminated creek as I wasn't near it! That Trestles contest should be fun to watch as well!

Ed, I had some time to kill early this morning, drove by the ponds- I was stoked! Frog mats, lilly pads, and a couple of decent 2+ pounders hugging the bank, I wish I had a stick- I snuck up on a nice one, crouched behind a bush and dropped a rock in front of him, he wanted to kill it, wouldn't leave the spot where I dropped the pebble. Would have crushed a jig!! BAss were actually chasing sunnies in the middle of the smaller pond, might stop by on the way to work, they seem to be active during the dawn patrol. Oh yeah, my buddy who ate it went to the dr., broken wrist and seperated shoulder, worse then he thought! OUch. Swell filled in today from the crap I saw this a.m., should be insane tomorrow for the 4th round of the CT contest. Both Irons are out, so is Occy, bummer. Slater won his heat today, tomorrow might be nutty down there. Lets fish the ponds, Ed, maybe an evening session some time? Saw Hogan today, I guess he dumped a T-Shark close to DP yesterday.

Grom, they are in San Juan Capistrano. You close by?

Chris, nice job. I missed two there the other night. Both Senko fish. Got two at Woodbridge the night it rained. Fished 2+ hrs w/out a bite, then 2 in a row. You up for hitting it some night?

Yeah, Ed, I'm up for it- Woodbridge would be cool, too- I want to get one out of the ponds, though- looks real fishy right now. where you at now? If you want to, we could whack some calis off longboards after this swell, I think I'll be surfing the next couple of evenings.

Surf was 5 to 7 with the occasional 8 footer at Creek. Went out at Gravels...broke my leash after only 1 wave (took 20 minutes to swim though the pounding shorebreak)...bummer! Bought another one at Killer Dana and headed out for round 2. Only got about 12 waves, but a few lined up well...easily over 100 yard rides. Lots of them were walled off today though with a little bump on the water...not as clean as last weeks swell, but bigger! I'm beat from paddling like a madman out there! Trestles must really be going off! Be careful if surffishing or fishing from the rocks!!!

Todd, it cleaned up nice this evening, and it was pumping- stoked to get the 7'0" wet, for once I needed it. Sheet glass and pumping, lowers must have been going nuts. Creek point looked pretty solid from the back. Grom, we are talking about the village, once in awhile those ponds will give up a good fish. I like the pads, not too many places around here with those! I'm going to throw the frog this week when the swell backs down.

From Creek/Gravels that is! I'm going to be busy the rest of the week...so I dont think I can make it out...at least I hit it while it was biggest! Will probably be smaller tomorrow, but still mucho fun!

Nice to see a big man win a contest in epic conditions! This swell was even bigger than the great hurricaine Hernan swell last week!

yep, stoked to see Egan win- as a big goofy footer, I wish I could bury the rail like big Luke- He might pass Irons in the ratings- this last swell was legit, I haven't surfed the ramp that big in years, pretty good for so cal!
