Anybody want to join me? I'll be getting to Hayes St. (just South of Wisconsin) around 8 or 8:30am, fish 'til maybe 12.

Well, I started there. But, the water was all black from the harbor dredging (didn't know about that one). Visibility was about 2", and it stank too. So after about 45min. I headed south in my truck. Ended up at the South end of South Carlsbad State Beach. Stated off really slow, 2 smaller ones the first hour os so. Worked my way up the beach and eventually went from 1/4oz to 1/2oz. This seemed to be the ticket. I then over the next 1.5hrs picked 6 more, 5 of which were over 10". 2 were 12-13" pigs.

Best bait was the Perch Power 1.5" Kalin grub. Other colors and styles got bit, but not like the PP. A bit of Calico Cocktail was very helpfull too. I didn't use a lot, just a dab every once in a while. I tried Fongster's nose hooking technique; my experience was that it did work, but twisting was bad. Funny how everyone else had the opposite experience. I've never had that much of problem with twist, so I'll probably stick to the old fashioned way.

Tide was not too high and not moving much. This was a slight issue because there wasn't enough water inside to bring in the fish. So I had to wade out onto the sandbar, got a little roughed up by the waves and very cold. Wind started around 10:30 or 11 making it very cold. Water was about 60ยบ. I only had my shortjohn, could of used the long one.

Walking back, I met a nice guy (allen?) who was also perchin'. He was stuck working the inside (he didn't bring his wetsuit). He confirmed that there wasn't much inside. Told him to check out Calfishing, and to look at Aztecwin's post for some good info.

It was a fun morning and just what the Doctor ordered.

Ed,

I must have missed you at Hayes St. by a matter of minutes. I took one look at the water and one deep breath and off I went for Ponto. You were fishing the south end while I was working the north evidently.

A first for me today in the surf. I had a Warden drop by and check for a license. I had a good 20 minute conversation with him as I had alot of questions about alot of topics. His name was Officer Gregory and was a pretty cool dude.

Also bumped into a few locals there that told me the Flatties move in pretty close in the late spring and told me to bring my swimbaits and castmasters next time I come down. They said the incoming tide works the best for them.

After reading your post I'm now convinced that I wasn't launching the grubs out far enough. I was ready to blame things on the most recent Grunion run that we had. I had a grand total of 3 Bards in the 6-7" range.

I'll give it a go manana and see what happens.

Sorry I missed you. Sounds like you had #'s if not size. I was content, though lot's of big ones would've been better.

One of these days we all need to meet up for perchin' and have a potluck after.

Ed
I enjoyed meeting and talking with you this morning.
Took your advice and dialed into this website. Thanks for turning me onto it. I've read quite a few of the posts. A lot of good info everyone is providing. I already feel like I know a bunch of fishing buddies out there!

I stayed out till 2:30p fishing the same area we were at. Caught a few more small ones but hooked up on 2 nice fat boys that I took home. Cleaned, slit the sides, rubbed some hawaiian salt on them and 'BAM!' on the grill.

Hope to see you out there again.

Glad to see you checked out the site, and registered. Like I said on Sat, lots of good info here. Look forward to seeing reports from you in the future.
