Launched at around 6:30 w/ Henry (only his second time in his yak) from cove north of Diver's Cove. Shorebreak was a little rough, so waited for a good lull and hit it. Henry kinda jumped in a little too far? and went over. His rods tangled in my paddle, but luckily I got free quickly and got outside relatively dry. Henry eventully got his gear back in line and made it out. We made for some deeper water boilers off Diver's Cove. My FF was reading o' the first couple hours so we were stuck boiler fishing. The FF eventually (after many restarts) started working.

The first boiler only yielded a couple bites and a small legal for me. Eventually we moved to the nothern boiler and pretty soon Henry had a very sturdy 4+ Calico on a Zippershad. This turned out to be his only fish for the mornng, but I think his day was made. Myself, I started picking away, and an 1hr and a half later I finished with 10 fish. 5 legal and 2 short calicos, 1 legal and 1 short sandie, and a 10" chunky sugar bass. My biggest was maybe 3.5, probably 3.

My fish came on a variety of Tight Line baits; Zippershad, Seeko, and the awesome 9" grub. Colors were mostly stuff with red flakes, though clear/hologram and this silver/silver flake color also got one each. The big key was to get the bait on the boiler, then work it along till it fell off, then work it along the rock all the way to the bottom (25' down). Sure I got a couple hits on the drop away from the rock, and one on the grind, but it was really all about staying in touch with the bottom.

Air was a little cold to start, got warm around 8:30 or so, then around 9:30 the wind made it cold agian. When we launched the wind was coming out of the canyon, it drop down to almost nothing (this was when it got warm), then it switched around to come out of the west. Water was really cold, down around 56 i think. I base that on the fact that my ankles hurt from hanging in the water. Current was going downhill at a modest rate.

Expecting a very slow skunky day (reports were not looking good at all), it was a pleasant suprise to find a couple willing fish. It was great to meet another OC yaker to share it with, and hopefully Henry will join me again some time.

Tight Line Lures

Very cool Ed. Your are the man when it comes to Zipper baits. Are you still in Vista? If you still have a tube, we need to hook up and rip some lips together. Maybe Newport for some angry spotties. The season is about right to start getting limits again.

Hey Terry, I'm in Lake Forest now. Haven't tubed in a yr plus, once I got my first yak I was over the tube. We should get together soon though. How's the family?
