I heard on SDFISH that a 21.11 was caught at Dixon on a mission fish. The picture will be in the paper tommorow. it was caught by jed dickerson

21.69...or 21 lbs 11 ounces. Sounds like the same fish Long released in 2001. An inch longer, and a 1/4 inch slimmer. If that fish ate a trout before she ate the mission fish...it'd be a new record.

21lbs. 11oz, this was not the same bass I caught in "2001", I was at the lake, and got to take a real good look at the bass, it was a totally different body shape, a much larger bass that easily at some point will be over 23 lbs...........It was 28" long x 26 3/4 girth

Wow 2 bass in one lake that have the potential to be World Record fish. How much pressure do you think Dixon will get now that, that fish was caught!

Way-ti-go Jed!! Boy did I put my foot in my mouth when I said the Japanese 19.4 would probably be the largest caught this year, anywhere. There have been two bigger that have come out of Dixon.
I talked to "The Boss" Mike Long today, and he "plucked" a ninteener out of his lake today (oops--is that a secret Mike?).
By-the-way, I interviewed the guy that got the 19.4 at Lake Ikehara in Japan. He and his group of guys that share info, 5 dudes, have got 30 teeners this season, as well as a 16.85 pounder. They have been working on two fish that are much larger than the 19.4 ( they all saw the 19.4, and several of them worked on it for 2 days in the crystal clear water). But until they catch it, I would say that the largest bass in japan is 19.4 lbs. That is just the way it is, in my opinion. Since I am rambling on, Biwa Lake in Japan produced countless double didgit fish this season. To see some of them go to my web site www.bigbait.jp
click on the generic swimbait section in the Big Bait area of the menu. Sorry, only japanese as of yet....we are working on an English version, and Spanish and Italian in the future.
Until next time,

Well what a difference a day makes, I got the pictures back I took of Jed's bass , and compared them to my 20.75 in "2001" I am 99.9% sure that it is the same bass, there is a black dot under the right chin in the exact same spot on my pictures, and the pictures of the 21.70........catch and release, I guess this girl might try to make the top 25 list three times.

Mike,
That is really awesome to hear about the likelihood that this fish was your same fish from 2001! 2003 has been the year of the big bass, and what's so amazing is that every fish I can think of over 18 this year has been caught and released :) :) :) Congratulations to Jed on his huge catch. What a bass!!!

MIKE,

I'VE ADMIRED YOUR EXTREME SKILLS IN CATCHING SO MANY LARGE TROPHY BASS IN RECENT YEARS, SO I FIND NO BETTER PERSON TO ASK AN OPINION OF REGARDING THE SIZE OF TWO FISH . I WILL BE SENDING YOU TWO IMAGES OF FISH ONE THAT I CAUGHT AND RELEASED ON APRIL 3 2003 AND ONE I PHOTOGRAPHED ON JUNE 6TH 2003. THE LATTER WAS FOUND FLOATING DEAD NEAR SHORE. IT MEASURED 29"!!! LONG. LOOK FOR THESE PICS SOON. THANK YOU.

North of San Francisco. I won't be dropping in anytime soon.

Wait till the lot fills up with guys from TEXAS and such. :P That's what happened at Spring Lake, here in my home town, when Paul Duclos caught that alleged 24 pounder(the UNOFFICIAL world record IMHO).

Chris,

What ever happened with Paul Duclos's 24 pounder? I've heard so many stories on it, from being caught illegally to being a 20 pound bass, either way it was impressive as well. But from what i've heard from other guys as well, that he really is a decent big bass fisherman as well.

Paul caught the fish on a baby bass pattern AC plug. It was legal and released live and well. BLESS THE MAN!
He has caught so much flack for that catch he has said he wishes, on one level, that he never had caught it.
I wish I had got to know him better. I was just getting to know him when I was let go from a tackle shop I was working at, at the time.
Paul is an excellent fisherman and anyone talking trash about him is full of XXXX and doesn't know his @$$ from a hole in the ground and is just spreading their sour grapes.

Chris

This is an edit: I bow to Paul Duclos. Mike is great but PAUL IS THE MAN! HE CAUGHT THE WORLD RECORD AND RELEASED IT.

No, it isn't. Check your facts. It was a wooden, baby bass painted, Castaic crank. THIS IS A FACT!

P.S. Swimbaits are made from soft plastic not wood! Although the definition has been blured over the years.

OK look ... Like anybody I was very interested in Paul's catch a while back. I searched all over online to read everyhing I could find about it. I also looked at some printed articles I had about the catch. The funny part is that in every article I read, they said the fish was caught on a different lure. Off the top of my head I remember reading that it was caught on a 12" hardbait castaic trout, a 9" hardbait castaic trout, a 9" softbait trout, and a castaic baby bass. I got the feeling that the people writing the articles really didn't know what he caught it on. If I was going to believe any of the articles, I would believe the article on worldrecordbass.com. I don't know Chuck Bauer personally, but if you read the site, it's clear that he knows Paul well and has talked with and fished with him quite a bit. In his article, it says that he caught the fish on a 6.7oz Castiac bait. Doesn't say which one sepecifically, but you can read for yourelf here.

http://www.worldrecordbass.com/article.asp?ID=32

I do know that Paul fishes the Castaic baits a lot, and is close with the guys who make the baits. He probably has a lot of prototype baits, different colors etc. Maybe the reason it's not well known exactly what he got the fish on is because he was using a proto bait or a color that was not sold to the public. This is purely speculation on my part obviously.

What would be really cool would be if someone who knows Paul or Paul himself would post and say what he got the fish on. But if he doesn't, I don't blame him. He caught a lifetime worth of crap over that fish and probably doesn't want to talk about it.

PS. Did you see those hogs he had in the article in Bass West? Guy knows how to stick them.

Hey Chris!

Castaic Crank?

They make Crank Baits? Where can I by some?

By the way, you shouldn't hammer Shane. It makes you look like an idiot because he read the same article that everyone else did, stating that it was caught on a Castaic trout imitation.

He was simply asking for a clarification and you stomped on him.
If you have proof via pic or personal testimony, please share.

In the meantime, I'll vouch for Shane as a well respected stick on this site. It is even more amazing that he is only 15 yrs. old and can light it up on the water.

HEY SHANE, KEEP ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS, AND WE'LL FIND YOU THE RIGHT ANSWER'S!!!

Late!

What Chris meant by crank was that it was wooden, instead of softplastic. Therefore, technically a crankbait and not a swimbait. People call them wooden swimbaits...

No, actually it's a plug. AKA a crankbait.

So there.
2895, RE: I thought so, too. (nm)
Posted by 59lbwsb, Mon Jun-16-03 02:27 PM
yes but in ur first popost u said it was an AC Plug. So who cares its still a plug or a swimbait!
2896, semantics
Posted by swimbait, Mon Jun-16-03 04:01 PM
Hey fellas, let's give this one a break. This is just an argument on semantics at this point. You say potato, I say potatoe. Some people call trout plugs swimbaits, some people call trout plugs crankbaits. Some people call everything bigger than 7" a swimbait. Some fishing papers report everything, bass trout or catfish was caught on powerbait .. ok, now I am joking. But seriously, I think we are good on this discussion.

I don't think anyone question's Paul's angling ability, or that he is a solid big bass hunter (The photo's on the web page don't lie!)

Was this the fish that spawned (No pun intended!) the "Bathroom Scale" controversy?

If so, I have to say (IMHO) that Paul acted in what he felt at the time was the most responsible manner with regards to the safety of the fish. I RESPECT THAT! NO BLAME OR FINGER POINTING SHOULD HAVE COME FROM THE RELEASE, THAT WAS HIS CALL.

What I have a problem with is the bathroom scale that his wife brought down to the dock.(If indeed, we are speaking about the same fish claimed @ 24lbs.)

If he thought that it had a chance at the record, why not find a rope or stringer and "Wade" in the water with the fish?
"Yo Bud, Can I borrow your Ice Chest and the curly cue straw from your son's Pepsi? "BRO! I'll buy you friggin' 20 KEGS of brew if I have what I think I have."

I would have waited 40 years for the DFG to come down and certify it.
(They could have pried that fish from my cold dead hands)

If wifey can bring you a bathroom scale, and you pull it out of the water for photo's, could'nt she dial 911 or 411 and make the call??

"Yes operator! THIS IS AN EMERGENCY! Get a cop to bring me a certified scale and a piece of paper with the line "Witness" at the bottom. Better yet, write me a DAMN ticket with the certified weight on it. I'LL GO TO COURT!! Hell, I'll look forward to it!

You can't hand a picture to the DFG and say, "Game Over" I win!
"No, really! it's 24lbs!!!! I swear, officer...My wife brought down the BATHROOM SCALE.............Oh, you mean "Certified Scale". No, what I did was weigh myself, then weighed my self holding the fish, and subtracted the weight, and divided by the circumference of the Earth on it's rotational axis.... But wait, I did have a big breakfast that morning, so.......Give me a break!

What is this a UPS package?

Do I think Paul is a bad person, or bad angler? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Could Paul have done things differently? ABSOLUTELY!

Well, I guess we are all experts on Monday morning.

Before you guys bury me on this post, ask yourself one simple question. "WHY DO WE DO IT?" I bass fish with the hope of one day breaking the record, as well as the competition from my club and other tournaments. I think it is safe to say that you don't see Mike Long busting his hump landing all kinds of toads, and dragging around a "Weight Watcher's" special.(Wait, those are certified scales...My Bad!)

I'm also a pragmatist who understands that if I did ever hook "The One!"(Yeah right!) It is probably not going to survive the ordeal, and it will be donated to B.A.S.S. for their hall of fame. Please don't start with me on catch and release practices(I CPR!),we are talking about (1) RECORD fish, and one fish only. If it has a chance to live, GREAT keep it in a tank or build a monument for it! Reality may dictate a different fate for the fish, and you have to consider that.
