3499, Graftech Rods???
Posted by setnhooks, Mon Dec-29-03 01:01 PM
Just received one these rods (gift), but i am not familiar
with this make. The model is G157OM, 15-25 lbs. Can this be
used for the smaller 7" swimbaits? Tried searching over
the internet for the MFG, but couldn't find anything. Any
Feedback?

Graftechs are well regarded saltwater rods. I have 4 of
them. I use a 8 foot model to throw my swimbaits with and am
very happy with it. I don't have your particular model. The
rods have a 5 year warranty and are carried by Turners
Outdoors. The manufacturer is in the San Diego region.

As far as power I have taken 70 ld yellowfin on my rod.
Most of the saltwater boards, inshore and offshore, who
discuss California tackle will have feedback about Graftech
rods. IMHO great rod for the value... not the lightest on the
market but solid actions and well made.

I throw all of my swimbaits with a Graftech GIS80H.As mention
these are not the lightest rods but I can throw the Big wood
and Swimbaits all day without to much fatigue. I own 7 or 8
custom Graftech rods For what they cost you can't go wrong. I
have taken 100 pound plus Mako's on them. To answer your
question I think your rod is a little too soft. you will have
some trouble with the hook set.But this is just my opinion.

The correct model is GIS70M, sorry about that. I appreciate
your info. Since this was a gift, i'll hold onto to it for
saltwater-live bait fishing-yellows,wsb,calicos. I was looking
into an 8' swimbait stick and reel.
What reels do you guys have matched with your swimbait sticks.
I am looking into the calcutta 400, but is the speed o.k. for
swimbaits? I think it's 4.7-1?

I have two swimbait rods and they both have a calcutta 400 on
them.I've had no problems yet. I did use my millionaire 300
for a short time. I did't like it as much as the calcutta.

Thanks, Shane
I'll think I will go with the 400, do you have the s model or
just the 400?

They are the straight 400 with a levelwind. I would use the
400S for
fishing chovies or sardines on 15 pound line. You want a reel
with a levlwind for the swimbaits and big wood.
