Sitting around tonight I realized something. Everyone is interested in catching
big fish. They want to know about the big baits, the heavy tackle, and the
little tricks and tips that help to put big fish in the boat. So here we go, a new
board all abou this subject.
I will start it off with a little tip that I have been using lately.
You may have heard about the relatively new line called Florocarbon. Well I
was skeptical about it, but decided to pick up a spool of 30lb Yamamoto Sugoi
Florocarbon. Looked about like mono but was incredibly strong and abrasion
resistant from what I could tell. What I was doing was tying in a 3 foot piece
of this florocarbon to my 25lb triple fish line when I throw my big trout plugs.
The business end of your line tends to take a beating when you are throwing a
2-5 oz plug. Well I tell you what, that florocarbon is unbelievable in this
application. I made several hundred casts at clear lake in a tournament in
november with that setup around docks, trees and tullies. I did not have to
re-tie once! Not a nick or a fray in the line. That's what I want on the end of
my line when a big bass hits close to a tree or dock post and dives into it. I
have total confidence now that I can drag a fish out of heavy cover. And, if
that weren't enough, the florocarbon is by all accounts, more light neutral than
mono, meaning that it absorbs light instead of reflecting it and is less visible to
the fish as such. Definitely something to check out.
