4558, The fattest bass I have ever seen
Posted by swimbait, Wed Apr-28-04 08:35 PM
I caught this fish today flipping the tullies. It was the fattest bass I have ever seen in real life or in pictures. The poor thing was 19" long x 19" girth and weighed an incredible 6.95lbs. I believe the fish was on a bed because it dripped out a few eggs when I was photographing it. I seriously just sat there and stared at it for the longest time because I couldn't believe how bizzarely shaped it was. I don't know what was in it's stomach, whether it was food, eggs, a tumor or what, but it was truly a sight to see!

I released her back with instructions to grow much much bigger and put those eggs down so there are lots more mutants like her :D

Wow, that thing looks like it's in pain! I've seen something like this in rats and cats, the condition is called megacolon. Cant say this fish has that, but I'm a former marine biologist and first time I've seen a fish like this. Maybe constipation from a senko stuck in it's butt!

dude, Matt that fish is as bizzare as mine. I can't believe it had enough energy to eat your bait. Cameron Smith told me some crazy stories about fish like that at El Capitan. Like a 6lber that looked like a 14 and stuff. Bass are weird critters sometimes.

The first one is eggbound and that is a fatal disease at times...
The fish will hold the eggs to long and it will become plugged...
I had a pet fish that past away from this disease...

4583, most likely a spotted bass
Posted by swimbait, Wed May-05-04 11:50 AM
I didn't post this originally because I really wasn't sure what species of bass it was, but after talking with several people, the consensus was that this fish is a spotted bass based on the size and location of the jaw relative to the eye.

I caught the fish at San Pablo dam which does (unfortunately) have spotted bass in it. Here's one last pic of the bass where it does look quite a bit like a spot. If they kept a lake record there for spots, I'd probably have it, but that isn't exactly the record I am after x(

I thought it looked like a spot from the top view in the original post. But, the spots are usually on the slender side.

yeah that is what had me so confused. I just couldn't mentally picture a spot that fat. I flipped a 3lb spot out of there a few weeks ago and it was about the exact same length as this fish but minus the gut. It's possible also that it's a largemouth/spot hybrid I guess.
