Do I have to "register" a 9' kickboat with DMV if it has an electric trolling motor on it? If so, does anyone know what it costs? I'm just about ready to take my new boat out for the 1st time. When I do put the trolling motor on, I don't want to get in trouble for not having the proper sticker.

Woodsac,
I know here in Ga, you must register any watercraft that has any type of motorized power, with the Ga DNR. I've often pondered the question myself as I would like to put a trolling motor w/my float tube.

It's worth calling and asking. You don't want to get caught short.

Yep, gotta register it, it's $14 bucks for the year, not to bad.

Hi there woodsac,

As fishcat said, ya gotta register it. Also, check your insurance! No joke! If you have a water accident and your PFD is not up to snuff, your insurance may be invalidated!!! If you fish from a craft, that craft must also have a net not to measure less than 18inches in diameter. honest!, Don't forget your running light as it's required anytime visibility is hampered (judgement call)i.e. fog, haze, etc.

I'm a tuber and I carry all that stuff.

What does a net have anything to do with safety? I'm seriously confused by that one.
Looking forward to your reply.

Checked the required equipment for boating from the Calif DMV here:
http://www.dbw.ca.gov/Pubs/Abc/Index.htm

and could find nothing on requiring a net. Maybe it's in the fishing regulations?

OK, I found it.
In the California Marine Fishing Regulations (read SALT water)

Item 28.65:

(d) No gaff hook shall be used to take or assist in landing any fin fish shorter than the minimum size limit. … No person shall take fin fish from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters without having a landing net in possession or available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize fish of species having minimum size limits; the opening of any such landing net shall be not less than eighteen inches in diameter.

Interesting. That must be new. Glad to know it's saltwater only.

"On inflatable boats or vessels so configured that a number will not properly adhere or cannot be clearly seen, the number should be painted on or attached to a backing plate along with the registration sticker. The number must be visible from each side of the vessel. No other numbers, letters, or devices may be placed in the vicinity of the state-assigned number."

Does anyone have a picture of this? Or a description of how you attached or displayed them? This seems so rediculous, but if I'm gonna do it, I want to do it right.

I would get a couple of 1x4 boards about two feet long and stick all the numbers and stickers to it, then just hang the "plates" so to speak, along side the pontoons. Tie the "plates" to the frame with some zip ties, this makes them easy to remove and use on a different boat if you wish. Hope this helps.
