21818, Spring Lake

Anyone been fishing Spring Lake lately? Ive only fished here a couple times in the last few months and it has been pretty unpreductive. I live right by it in walking distance but it doesnt seem to be worth it. Has anyone had any luck out there, and if you have, wat have u been catching them on?

Thanks,

Hey Jdub,

Although I have not fished much in a while I would have to tell you to go out either really early or late at Spring. This time of year can be very tough during the day but can be absolutely wild at night! There is debate on if we should even be fishing night since it is somewhat illegal but some of the guys in the club have had nights of close to 35 lb limits! Crazy. Buzzbaits are the way to go at night but blades will work too.

Again, to be totally legal just go right before the sun gets up and work hard and fast with the blade I told you about a while ago. You'll catch some quality fish that will make your day!

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Todd

I've hardly fished the lake this year. However, I did go out for 1 1/2 hrs a couple of weeks ago in the early afternoon. I noticed the water had an unusual, brownish stain to it & the weeds weren't nearly as thick as they normally are in the summer. My guess was that they might have sprayed it heavily to kill the weeds, &, without the weeds to hold & trap sediment, the lake has become murkier. That might be one of the reasons the bite has been tough there lately.

Todd,

What color spinners and buzzers at night? Would u go all black, and for spinners wat kind of blades? Also, When u say night time, wat times would u mean. Like evening, or pitch black night? soft plastics?

Thanks a lot,

I like going straight black on black at night. Spinnerbaits would be either 1/2 or 3/4 oz single colorado blade (need it to THUMP!). Make sure you have a stinger hook on back as you will miss a ton of fish if you don't.

When I talk night I mean from 10pm - sunrise. The 9-10pm time for me does not seem to produce as well as after 10pm.

Man, with all this talk I'm thinking of heading out there in my float tube! Would be fun to catch a pig there at night.

Good luck either way and post how you do!

Hey Todd long time no talk, how have you been? Anyways I was wondering if any of you have hooked a black light up to your boats? I fished till 11 last weekend but when it got dark i just couldnt see anymore and was casting in to to much crap. Any ideas?

Jdub I live in sebastopol if you wanna hook up(no pun intended) I have some great local spots. Let me know......

Hey Daniel,

You're right, haven't talked in a while, huh?

I actually try to use as little light as possible. I've tried the blacklight thing with something cheap from Wal-mart but it didn't work very well. You might want to try something like what they have in the catalogs as they are probably a little brighter.

The only time I have a serious challenge is when I'm fishing in a secluded area on a new moon. Otherwise, I just blind cast (always throwing underhand, low to the water) and get a feel of where the shore is. Most of the time, if you are patient and don't use a light too much, your eyes will get adjusted to the minimal light.

When I'm blind casting it is almost always with something very weedless for obvious reasons. :+

i was out there today, i went strictly for a hog, threw a 10 in. power worm in the rocks, tules, drops, weeds, and deep stuff in the north end of the lake, not even a touch. honestly i have given up on this lake, it got unbelievably pressured after that story this last year, and its also right in santa rosa so usually when a bank fisherman catches some bass its either dinner, or his prize to go show everyone, i have seen to many times here when a group of people sit on the bank with live dads or minnows with 10+ bass on stringers. there r still bass in there but not like there used to be.

yeah dude, I only fished Spring once this year and I felt like I hit it at a good time for some spawning fish, and it just sucked. There were males up and every one of them had been caught already. It just had that totally beat down feeling to it. Not a single female to be seen. No doubt there are still giants there but they need a period of low fishing pressure to recover.

I went out last week and caught a couple of dinks on watermelon with red fleck senkos . they were all way up in the bushes , the bigger fish were even further in the bushes in really shallow water and did not even want what I was throwing at them .

I still fish Spring on a regular basis. I usually fish Saturday morning when the park opens till around 2:00 or so. This is the worst year I have ever seen. My biggest this year is only 5 lbs even. I have had some success drop shotting and flipping and very few on reaction baits. Most all of the areas that have produced in previous years seem to be void of fish. Like Andy said the water and weeds are kind of weird this year. I attributed that to spraying also but they have been that way all year. Hard to find healthy looking weeds. People are doing crazy things to this lake. Cutting down the toolies so they can get back in closer. There is also a lot of muskrats or some kind of critter that is cutting off the toolies and eating the tender shoots. I've seen lots of them munching on the toolies this year. Something ive not seen before. People have been taking way to many fish out of this lake the last couple of years. Ive seen lots of tubers with fish on stringers and the son and mother combo are killing all the bass they catch. Several people have said they have seen them stringing up all the bass they catch and ive seen it too. Not sure what kind of twisted reasoning they have for that. Any ways it does not take much to screw up a small lake like spring. I'm sure it will rebound but who knows when. All we can really do is try to educate people to catch and release and hope it sinks in.

Yea, i feel the same way, and i bet everyone else does about catch and release. Go over to Lake Ralphine and take fish out of there if ur goin to. But i have had some really close incounters with some of the otters or watever they are. Some scary stuff :o Maybe one day i will see u out there dave.

There are actually a few deeper spots in Spring. Up to 20 ft actually. Kind of hard for me to explain here but ask Dave at one of our meetings. Sorry Dave :+

Maybe some of the SCBBBC guys can confirm these spots. I would be interested in knowing if it's legit.
Enjoy :+

I WAS OUT AT SPRING LAKE ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO GOT ON THE WATER AT ABOUT
7:30AM AND CAUGHT A 6LBER AT ABOUT 10:30AM.IT WAS THE ONLY BITE A GOT AND THE ONLY FISH I CAUGHT.I HAVE FISHED IT A COUPLE OF OTHER TIMES AND CAME UP WITH A BIG 0 NOT EVEN A NIBBLE.THIS LAKE HAS BEEN VERY PRESSURED FROM THE PEOPLE LOOKING TO CATCH THE BIG ONE AND ALSO THE PEOPLE WHOE ARE PUTTING THEM ON STRINGERS AND TAKING THEM HOME.I HAVE SEEN ALOT OF QAULITY SIZED BASS BEING TAKEN OUT OF THIS LAKE.I BELEIVE THIS LAKE IS GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME TO START PRODUCING AGAIN IF IT EVER DOES.WICH IS SAD.THERE ARE IM SURE STILL SOME TROPHY SIZE BASS IN THIS LAKE.I JUST HOPE THE PEOPLE WHO CATCH THEM WILL RELEASE THEM.I TO LIVE CLOSE TO SPRING LAKE AND I HAVE TO SAY I DO NOT FISH THERE TO OFTEN ANYMORE. I FIGURE THATS JUST ONE LESS PERSON PRESSURING
THIS LAKE AND HOPEFULLY 3 TO 4 MORE BASS BEING BORN.VERY HARD LAKE TO FISH THESE DAYS:(
FISH ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

No problem Jdub. That is what this site is all about, sharing info! This is what makes the BnT forum the #1 place on the internet for answers to all your Kickboat/floattube and bass fishing questions.

Hmmm, maybe a map gallery in the photos section. Something that would show some good launch locations and fishing hotspots at places like Clear lake and the delta as well as any other lakes we all fish. What do you guys think?

Mitch

that would be kind of a cool addition to the photos galleries, let me know if you need any help putting together a tube launching gallery. There are so many places we could never give them all away, but it sure would be cool for new guys that feel they are at a disadvantage cause they have never been to these waters before.
