824, Opening tournament in February

OK people of the BNT Forum.
Would like to get your input on Bass-N-Tubes’ opening tournament in February.
When choosing a location. Here are some things to consider: Lodging, camping, water to be easily accessible, parking space for twenty vehicles.
Any special regulations please note.

Joey and all
I have been giving this much thought especially after last year at Nacimiento.
I would like to put in my vote for Santa Margarita. There are good parts and bad parts to margarita in February though so here goes.

Pro's = February is prime time on Margarita. I know this sounds strange but the last 3 years of fishing there, February has always been the best and especially for bigger fish. Margarita has ample parking and does not have overly restrictive rules. The gate usually opens 1/2 hour before sunrise. Probably not early enough to launch at safe light on the dot, but pretty early. There are two ramps both of which would be great for launch and weigh in. There is not much boat traffic at Margarita (especially in February) and the lake has a lot of accessable water for those wishing to use the runners rule. There is camping and it is pretty decent, right on the lake. Camping in February can be ugly though so....

Con's = The biggest draw back at Margarita is that I don't think there are any cabins or condos or similar near the lake. There are some trailers kind of like Naci that are just outside the gate but I'm not sure if those can be rented or not. I will look into it but it's not a sure thing. The nearest town is Santa Margarita 8 miles away. After that Paso Robles, about 20-25 minutes away. I know this is an important consideration in February so I won't go crying if we don't go to Margarita because of that reason. The other negative is that it's pretty far away. I timed it last weekend and I would estimate that it is 1/2 hour farther than driving to Naci, around 3 - 3 1/4 hours coming from Fremont.

So that's an option to think about. I guess the last positive is that if we go to Margarita I will kick your butts and take the $$$ LOL.

Ok I looked into the KOA site 1/4mile from the lake.
They have what they call Kamping Kabins. $42 a night for 2 rooms it says on their website

I tried calling but they have some funky winter hours so I will have to try later. Might work out ok.

I also vote Margarita on account of it's closer!!! har har. Definitely Margarita over naci, fishing wise, but those cabins at naci were pretty sweet (actually, I haven't seen the ones at margarita, so I can't really compare).

Wow I’m only counting four people in response to a suggestion vote.

~Makes it easy~

COME ON PEOPLE put up a couple of your favorites lakes.
Let’s talk about if they could be used in and throughout our 2001 circuit.
Starting with February.

that late gate entry, as well as limited lodging facilities, might hamper our efforts (and maybe limit attendance, too!). Don't get me wrong, I've wanted to fish that pond for a long time, given everything Rob has had to say about it over the past few years. I just don't know if we can pull it off, if we don't have everybody camping overnight within the gates. UNLESS, maybe, we can NEGOTIATE something with the owners/operators, about opening that gate up a little earlier that weekend. Of course, camping is still gonna be a little dicey, given the potentially nasty weather for that time of year.

I don't know...

San Antonio might be a reasonable option, as John has suggested. I personally have never fished there, but with it being an hour or so CLOSER to us than S.Marg., and given their additional lodging options, that might be the better alternative.

As for McClure? Hmmm... how do you think the fishing would be in February? Again, lodging/camping options have to be considered.

I guess, bottom line, I'm leaning toward San Antonio. Naci's facilities have worked out well for us, but the fishing just hasn't been worth it for us, ANY of the last 3 years I've gone!
