24, Fish Report for October 1, 1999

Today Brian Long, James Beck, John Paul Beck and I headed out for an afternoon on the Stardust. The weather was really nice, sunny with a slight breeze and flat swells. We looked around at the one mile for a few minutes before heading down the line to fish the horshoe rock. Water temps were 61 degrees although they went up a little as the afternoon progressed. At the horshoe rock the fishing was tough although a few rockfish were brought in and I landed the later to be jackpot 14" calico. So you're probably thinking this trip was a bust, but it was quite to the contrary as we moved again down to the horshoe kelp and after 20 minutes of chumming had a very nice bite going on the small calico. Everyone caught at least a half a dozen with some on the squid strips and some on the live chovies. I had probably 20 bass flylining with a 3/8 oz weight. The key was to find a small chovie with a good nose (not red or smashed). Every good bait like that was an easy fish. Even though the fish were small it was fun to feel them grab the bait and take it for a run. As always, a good time was had by all on the Stardust
