#47955, "June 17, 2017 - Middle River report"

I went to MR last Saturday. Haven't been there in a while so I was hoping for good things.

My day started at 5:00am with nice shirt sleeve weather, warm with the smallest of breezes. I fished the last 2 1/2 hours of the outgoing tide and the first couple of hours of the incoming. Water temps were about 70 when I started and got as high as 72 when I pulled out at 10:30 or so.
By the time I was getting off the water the wind was blowing and the temperature was already over 90.

I managed my first fish on a frog 15 minutes into the day. It was small, but a good sign right? Not so!
The next fish was an hour later at the barrier/no barrier. That's right the barrier isn't up yet.
This fish was better at right around 3 pounds. I pounded the river for the next couple of hours working my way up to the meat wall for nothing. On my way back downstream the wind started to blow in earnest and the tide switched to the incoming. I managed one 2.5 pounder on a blade in one of the few open areas I found along the bank where I could throw it and that was it for keepers. Not a banner day but still better than a stick in the eye!

Oh ya bring your punching gear if your heading to MR. I didn't have mine like a dummy!
There isn't any hyacinth in the river at all this year. Instead the banks are blanketed with thick elodea all the way to the channel edges everywhere.
If they aren't eating in the trough then punching or fishing the weed edges is almost all that's left at low tide.

Maybe this weekend will be better. It's a screaming tide!

No Max, the barrier isn't up yet.
With this heat wave the snow will be melting fast so they may be keeping it down until most of the runoff is done.

I bet the delta water temps drop some to in the next few days.
