Salt Spring Valley Reservoir Report
5/12/18
Water Temp: 70
Weather: 88 and breezy

I had been looking forward to rejoining my Bass-n-tubes brothers on the tourney trail, and what better place than SSVR. It's a privately owned farm lake stalked with aggressive bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish.

We launched at 5:30am and the start of my plan was to fish the rip raft wall first thing to see if I could catch a few quick fish before fishing some other areas. I rowed about halfway down picked up a 3.8 Keitech USA under-spin in the new morning dawn color. First cast, let the bait sink and boom, set the hook on my first keeper. About 1.5lbs.

I fished the wall for about another 15 min throwing a bunch of different lures looking for a reaction bite, but nothing. I picked up my Canopy Grenades dart head rigged with a 4" robo worm and started catching a bunch of fish, but nothing in the right size.

I decided to row to a point across the lake from the dam. I picked up my jerkbait and started catching fish every cast. I was targeting this primrose type plant and casting all around them. I had a limit by 7am, but all were a bunch of 1-1.5lb clones. Fish were biting frogs, buzzbaits, small swimbaits, but I couldnt get a flip bite going.

I decided to leave the point, knowing I'd be back later in the day. As the day warmed up, the jerkbait bite died off. I knew the fish should be in cover and decided to make a color change from green pumpkin with purple and green flake to watermelon and red flake. First flip with my 7" senko and boom, a 2lber. Few casts later, another cull fish. I work my way around the lake targeting sparse weed patches with layovers. I found an ideal small patch and make a cast to it, my line runs right, I set the hook, and the fish has already made a 180 to the left side of my boat. I play catch up trying to keep pressure on the fish. She's working me over, but I keep myself calm and play her smart instead of rushing her to the net. She ends up being a 4.5lb post spawner.

I'm pretty jacked up now thinking this is the deal. I just need a few more 3+ and this is a done deal. I spend 11am-1:30pm exploring new weed patches, but didnt manage to upgrade. I'm sitting with about 11.5lbs. Based on my lake location, I had 2 options to finish up my day. I could return to the rock wall or head back to the first point. There were about 5 boats sitting on the wall, so I opted for the less pressured point that had my buddy Scott was sitting on.

I tied on a Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits cali roll with a WOO Tungsten drop shot weight and started drifting up and down the point. After about 10 min I had caught a couple fish but no size. I make a cast, set my rod down to grab some water and my rod starts sliding off the boat. I grab it, put pressure on it and out jumps a huge fish about 15 yards out. I'm using 6lb test and know I'm in for a fight. I loosen my drag and every time she runs I'm hand stripping line out to make sure she doesn't break me off. After what seems like an hour (really about 5 min) she slides into my net and I know I now have a legit shot at winning this thanks to this 5.15lber

I weighed in 15.65, enough to take first place and big fish.
