#11, "May 8, 1999 Cachuma Lake:"

The bass were up shallow again with some bigger fish deep in the cover. The weather was foggy in the
morning and really hot in the afternoon. The water was really clear and warming up and the bass are getting
more active. Most of the fish were really skittish and ran away from our lures. I caught three bass on a little
spoon. It was called a wee kamlooper. It's a gold metal spoon with red and white. The key to most of the
bass sitting on the nests or on the bottom was to use a really small, subtle lure such as a little spoon, jig,
spinner or even a kastmaster. And just drag it across the bottom right in front of the bass really slowly,
stopping frequently. The lure should be stopped more than moving. The action of the lure doesn't matter
much because it will just be dragging along the bottom. Wait for the bass to pick it off the bottom and have
it in it's mouth. I set the hook prematurely like five times. I also caught a little bass on a spinner bait after
lunch. Nick caught two bass without breaking his rod, (see the may 2 report for details on that) one on a
kastmaster and one on a spinner. The biggest fish between us was caught by me and it was only about 2
pounds so wasn't an epic day, but it was fun watching the bass suck up the lures in the clear water. There
was a bass tournament while we were there so the place was packed.
