#14731, "SWBA “Midnight Standoff”"

Pete and I fished round 4 of the Salt Water Bass Anglers “Race for the Cup” Series event the “Midnight Standoff” on Saturday night.

This event was the first night tournament for the SWBA and started at 10:00 PM on Saturday night and weighed in at 6:00 AM on Sunday morning.

The format was:
5 bass alive
Calico Bass, Sand Bass and Spotted Bay Bass
5 Point Bonus for having all 3 species in your bag
13 inch minimum
Launch and weigh in at South Shores in Long Beach

I tried to sleep in as late as possible Saturday morning knowing that I would need it staying up all night Saturday night.

We were in the last flight of boats to blast off at the start, about boat 40 out of 50. The tournament start was awesome complete with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem sung live from the tournament boat and broadcast over VHF. Just having 50 teams and boats all together in the dark itching to go is enough to get the blood pumping. Finally they got things started and teams began blasting off into the blackness.

We made a run South to a little hard bottom spot that I had found a couple of months back. We actually stopped a little bit short of my numbers to look and another spot, but finding nothing on the graph we continued on to our main spot.

When we got there and started to meter around. We passed over my mark and the graph just exploded and lit up like a Christmas tree. Were here and it looks sick!

We started slugging fish right off the bat and had 5 legals in the tank in about 15 minutes, all sand bass. Pete then gets ripped big time and ends off breaking it off on 50 pound straight tie braid. Ouch. We started to upgrade our fish and then Pete gets ripped again. I can tell this is a big fish and he’s already claiming “It’s got to be a ling”. I’m standing there with the net praying for it to “Please be a Bass”. It came up white and we put this slug of a sand bass on board that ended up going 8.3 Pounds.

I can’t tell you how stoked we were to have a pig like that in the tank so early. I was real happy to be net boy, but I needed to get in the game. It was my turn to get ripped and I did. This time it came up gold and I put a solid 6+ pound Calico in the tank. Pete followed that up with another 5+ pound Calico.

By 12:30 we were sitting on a 25 pound bag, but the fish were still biting and we weren’t done yet.

Now the all time biggest bag in SWBA history (7 years of tournaments) was something like 25.7 Pounds. I knew we were knocking on the door to break the all time record.

In the next hour we continued to just slay the fish with a mix of Sand Bass and Calicos and we ended up culling twice more. Both times they were upgrades of several pounds.

By 1:30 we had our bag. We continued to catch fish but couldn’t get anything to go over the 4 pounder that was our smallest fish. We were dumping back 4 pounders like they were nothing. It felt very surreal as normally we would kill to have 4 pounders. We must have caught close to 60 bass.

I figured we were sitting on about 29 Pounds and easily had crushed the old record. You would think with 29 pounds of record smashing fish in the tank that we would have the win for sure. The funny thing was that, with the bite the way it was and the amount of ridiculously talented fisherman that make up the ranks of the SWBA, I figured someone had 30 pounds and we were looking at a second or third and maybe a big fish check.

I was wrong.

There ended up being 3 bags over 30 pounds!!!!!!!!!

We ended up taking fourth place (unbelievable) with 29.20 pounds and our best finish ever in a SWBA series event. We also got third place big fish money for Petes big sandro. It was a great night and great fishing. I would like to thank my partner Pete Wolf and Big Hammer for a great event and season and also our other sponsers, Pro-cure bait scents, Shimano, P-Line, Promar, Aftco / Bluefever, Fishworks, Albackore. It is because of there awesome products and support of our team that we are able to fish this series.

I also want to congratulate Big Hammer team “Oh Son” Mike Nguyen and Mike Dumalski for not only winning the event but also absolutely destroying the old biggest bag record with a sick 31.78 pound bag. WOW!!!

Almost all of our fish came on a new Big Hammer color that we have been developing for night time fishing called “Midnight Phantom” #139. It is a black back with gold flake, a dark blue/purple belly with silver flake and chartreuse tail.

I also caught a number of good fish on my go to color for big bass “Senorita”. We also were using Pro-cure gel scents in krill, squid and garlic flavors.

Here are the final results.
