Kept a handful of albies, a couple of YFT, two tails from Clemente, one big WSB, and a few nicer butts. Released some tails (I had a slow year for forks!), all the bass, some legal butts, a couple of smaller albies, and everything else I was lucky enough to catch. Can say I had no freezerburn this year, but still kept myself, family and some friends stoked on fine meals.

Also kept a few albies, 2 yellowtail, 2 legal halibut, one legal WSB, 10 whitefish, a mantis shrimp and 4 smallish bonito which I found out are pretty good if you keep them out of the sun. I released many bass, albies and BIG spanish macks, short WSB and halibut(2 legals), a few rockfish, cabezon, whitefish,'cuda, bonito and macks not to mention the lizardfish and tomcod.

GOOD point about releasing bass.I wish more people would do the same.

Dig this-
Seaforth landing ALONE kept almost 25,000 Calicos.
With 22 major landings from Santa Barbara to Diego averaging about the same, that would be 550,000 Calicos.
Then you add in the private boaters.
Probably close to 3/4 of a million.
WAY too many in IMO. They should lower the limit-period.

I totally agree!!

A 10 fish limit for Calico Bass is not only utterly rediculous... it's completely Unacceptable!!

I think even 5 fish is way out of line. They also need to establish a slot limit that is based on sound research. Maybe something like 13-14 inches only! :D

Personally, I wouldn't mind if they made calicos CnR only but most would view that as extreme.

What I would like to see a slot limit of 14-17 inches and a limit of 5 or less. No one needs to keep more than 5 bass in a trip.

Bad news: This "meat fisherman" will ALWAYS have room for a couple or 3 of the smaller tasty calicos in his sack.

Good news: In a given year I probly don'r kill more than 4 or 5 of the critters, and more of us are aware of the need to send the bigger models back to that calico love shack to make more. :D And I have seen party boat deckhands make people aware of that, too.

Couldn't agree more on the max size & smaller bag limits, tho neither is usually an issue for me! :(

Tight lines,
Fishslayer

3 bft
2 albies
1 yt
1 dodo

All bass, fresh and salt, released as well as 1 legal halibut, a fat sculpin and that is about it. I guess most of my time was spent bassing.

releasing bass- working as a deckhand on a 6 pack out of SD in the late 80's, we had notches on the aluminum bait tank to measure the legal bass- 12", 22" for the butts, 28" for the WSB, etc- as there were little to no albies or other tuna these years, many trips were spent fishing the bass and shallow water rockfish from the Coronados south to Ensenada Bay- the passengers never noticed that the mark we made for the bass was really 15", they still went home happy and hopefully a few bass got to live to spawn a couple more times. Wish they would make that the law here, and drop it from ten to five per angler. I have faith in the DF&G, if there was a problem with the bass they'd address it, but I wouldn't mind C&R some of those bass that escaped the gunny sack. Just my dos pesos.

Oh yeah, nice new kelp popping up off San Mateo, really nice, had the bass going nuts this afternoon, Calis, sandies, and even the Johnny bass- glad to say they will all be there for you tomorrow.

I got my half on a sardine and my cousin got his half on a Big Hammer. The fish grabbed my bait and during the initial run (before I set the hook) he went over and grabbed my cousin's swimbait.

The initial jump was kind of funny as it was close to the boat and you could distinctly see both lines going to the fish. It was still a pretty good fight

I haven't posted over here much, but I did do a fair bit of fishing during 2001. Most of my trips were flyfishing trips to the Kern River. I managed a nice flyfishing trip for bass with small surface poppers on Lake Success during Spring. I also had three nice trips down to Redondo Beach/Kings Harbor for bonito. All in all 2001 was a nice fishing year for me. Even though I caught fish on every trip, I took none home. All were released to be caught again.

Since I'm based in Bakersfield, I haven't had much ocean fishing opportunity but I'm going to try some surf-fishing during 2002. It will be my first attempt at surf-fishing. I've also been promised by a friend that he'll take me over to the Morro Bay/Cayucos area for some night-time shark fishing from the piers. This will also be a first for me. Sounds like fun.

If you're ever in the Santa Barbara area give me a shout. I surf fish quite a bit for halibut and white seabass using Big Hammers and am always looking for other CnR anglers to share information with.

N-West Georgia fisherman here. I release all fish. However if I catch a 30 lb. striper or more, it will be mounted. I have recently started bending down barbs on my hooks in order to give fish a better chance of survival.

Measure the length and girth and take a picture. Repro mounts are the best way to go. They last longer and you don't have to kill the fish.
