Picked her up today. Even better than I remember... Man have I got big plans for this boat. First trip will hopefully be this weekend at Cachuma if we can take the motor to Jose for a look over before then. BTW: It's a 16ft. dory custom made by Schock boats in Newport. 40hp Johnson commercial, top speed 38mph, cruises at 28.

Awesome. I so glad that worked out for you. I'm sure that boat will get many hours of good fishing. Post some pics for us.

Wow, this cable modem sure uploads quicker than the old one ;-) As for the boat- how bout that freeboard??? In the water she sits with the water line just below the drain holes (from the drain holes down is solid foam), with a couple guys in the boat she moved MAYBE 4 inches down in the water. Jose (the guy I bought it from) says when he bought the boat, they guy he bought it from said you CAN'T sink it. Jose made him prove it. They pulled the drain plugs, stood in the boat, and ran a hose in it too. The water rose to just below the cut out part of the transom, then the boat stopped sinking, with two guys in it. Sounds pretty safe to me.

Brian, may I make a suggestion? Try the boat for a while (at least 10 times) before deciding to put in that center console. It looks great as is, and I think you'll lose a lot of space. I say take the comfort while fishing over the comfort of the drive. Maybe do a console on the side up toward the bow. Try to come up w/ a design out of the norm that could give you all the space and casting room w/out sacrificing the usable space you have.

Amish Ed, thats a great idea, i am not too hot on the idea of the center console. The boat is awsome and Brian should just leave it how it is. I went and checked it out last night at Brian's house and i completly agree that he should take the comfort while fishing over the comfort of the drive. Well whatever Brian does with it, i'm sure it will be awsome!

Ed,
It's not going to be a huge console or anything. The plan was to be 16" wide (that's the same distance between the two boxes, to give you an idea), 36" tall and 18" deep. By keeping it low, we can get around it easier, and being narrow, we can have plenty of walking space on both sides. Removing the boxes will take away storage and seating, but will add more deck room. We can store the electronics (which would currently be stored in one box) on the console of course, another box has safety equipment which can go in the bow, and the other two boxes have gas tanks. We only really need one tank for a day of inshore fishing, so that can either be open on the deck in the stern, or we could build a little box back there to put it in/sit on. Another reason I want a console is because tiller steering a 40hp on that squirrely of a boat especially, is pretty sketchy. I drove the boat around yesterday a little bit, and it just didn't feel comfortable. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but with that extension on there, if I needed to turn sharply in an emergency, it would GREATY impact my reaction time. I know putting in the console WILL effect space and stuff, but I think it's just safer. Plus, it won't be impacting our storage THAT much, as we only really need half that storage. We'll see though, I'm not gonna take a rotary saw to it this afternoon or anything.

Hey Brian,

If I can add my $.02, having the center console makes a big difference when you are trolling and/or fighting/following a big fish, especially solo. Having a tiller run engine makes it harder to keep the boat on a straight track and man your rods without constantly adjusting the tiller. It also brings the center of gravity more in the center of the boat, where it is more stable. You will also be much more comfortable standing, as opposed to bent over, or sitting low and sideways as you try to steer. Do take it out a few times to get a feel.

Brian - email me, I can see the boat next week if you want.

You can call my friend Scott, at Scott Mobile to take a look at it at 689-5609 He has always done right by me, on all my engines. He is a good friend of mine who stands behind his work. I also have all that stuff for you at my house. I also have an anchor you can borrow till I get a boat later this year.

Looks GOOD!
Is it a commercially made boat made after the mid 80's and/or does it have the small metal Coast Guard certified tag usually attached to the transom. If it does, the part where it talks about weight tells you how much it will float without sinking completely even if filled with water. This is to satisfy the "positive flotation law" which basically says any mass produced commercially available American vessel made after 1984(I think that's the year) shall provide positive flotation for a specified(by the tag) "reccomended" load. This is usually calculated by either the Coast Guard or a third party lab. It's equal to the bouyancy of the empty new boat completely submerged minus 5 or 10%(I don't remember the actual %) to allow for loss of bouyancy over time(ie: your foam taking on water through tiny cracks and not being able to let it go). This is very comforting, but keep in mind many boats capsize if tested in this way. They flip because their center of bouyancy when filled with water is very low when upright while the center of gravity is usually a bit higher. When sunk, the boat will flip to get the center of bouyancy over the center of gravity.
Sorry about the physics/ boating law lesson. You probably already know some or most of this.
Anyways, Congrats on the boat.

Tight lines,
Wade

Wade,
I don't care which way it sits in the water as long as it floats if I run into a rock!!! The boat was made in '74. I was wondering about the plate (after I got it home of course). So, that doesn't apply to boats prior to '84 (or whatever)? Kinda like the seatbelt deal?

You got the idea. They actually started rating boats on a voluntary (but expensive) basis in the late 70's, then made it a law. My ex-Coast Guard buddy said he thinks it was '83, but it doesn't matter when it was exactly if yours was made in the mid 70's.
BTW you probably would care which way it floated, as your gear would be on the bottom and it's hard to stay on a capsized boat, especially if your knocked unconcious or wounded. I know, my dad learned the hard way that our 27' sailboat wasn't Exactly 100% self righting when fully loaded, 85 nauticle miles SW by W of Point Sur on a tack back up the coast from around Pismo to Moss Landing. We were on the way back up the coast after going from the South end of SF Bay, through the Golden Gate and down to Oxnard (we were headed for Baja but ran out of time).
Boat SAFE and always wear your PFD when under way. They can and do save lives.
Have you set up a drift anchor? I didn't see any 5 gallon buckets
on ropes. Your size boat would probably only need 1 or 2 buckets.
Make sure you tie the rope to holes through the buckets, not the wire handle that'll pull out in a 10Knot wind.

Tight lines,
Wade
