El Cajon Ford tourney in San Diego. Day 1. Matt and Cameron laying waste with a 26.57lb limit. That's in a 6 hour tournament! At El Cap!

All I got was this grainy photo :) Matt will probably have something on his blog.

Cameron and I had an excellent Day 1 on El Capitan. We were brought right back down to earth today on Otay, where we only had 3 keepers and basically fumbled an excellent opportunity to sweep the entire event and win it all. We sucked at Otay today, straight up. Couldn't get it going or done.

Yesterday, life was good. Cameron had fish going pretty good on El Cap, which freed us up in the morning mentally and spiritually to just go fish and have some fun. Fished buzzbaits and got some tiny fish to blow up on it. Cameron catches one keeper finaly. We move back toward the back of the lake, and pull over on a steep bank with shade, wood, and big rocks. I noticed Cameron didn't have his money rat tied on, so I asked him if I could tie one of his on. He obliged and I got one to kiss it about 15 minutes later off some wood. BIG HEAD on this fish. She looked huge in the water with this big old head (unfortunately she was super skinny, but had a teen sized frame it appeared). Rago Rat, original wooden super OG rat that has caught a billion fish for Cameron, and I catch a 9.89 in the El Cajon Ford on El Capitan. That fish held up for the Big Fish of the Event which was cool.

Cameron was on a spoon bite on deep suspended fish around wood, and hooked one that went 7.80 pounds. So we had 2 absolute giants for El Cap in the boat. We somehow got both big bites in the boat, and Cameron filled up our limit with some other decent keepers. 26 pounds on El Cap was just insane.

Otay, today, we couldn't get frog fish love, swimbait love, breaking fish love....nothing. We should have just settled in to catching a limit from the get go and fished outside slow and deep and caught us a limit. Oh well. Lots of fun. Huge thank you to Paul Leader, El Cajon Ford, Anglers Arsenal, the Cassidy crew and everyone who put the event on. Just fun to fish in San Diego with a bunch of old friends and peers.

It was cool meeting you at the tournament Matt and good talking with you. You might not have done well at Otay, but you guys KILLED El Cap. To catch two fish like that at Cap with one just under 10; that's huge. Lots of people will remember that limit, but few will remember who won. I don't even know the guys and I live here:)!

Arden

FIVE POUNDERS ARE SMALL :)!

Arden, glad to meet you too. I really enjoyed the event and just having a chance to get back down to SD and be part of the fishing community. Too much fun talking to folks and getting caught up.

If you were to told me we would have had 26 pounds on El Cap and 6 pounds on Otay I would have told you you had it reversed. Otay has been where the big ones lived, in my mind anyway. Here is a frog fish from Otay when Cameron and I were pre-practicing a few weeks ago on Otay. Transporter froggie. Good frog, but the weight on the belly has a bad habit of coming off randomly, needs to be addressed, but otherwise a really innovative and unique frog, with the cupped face and arms.

I appreciate the props on the El Cap bag we weighed in. I have never caught a fish over 4 pounds on El Cap, and I've been fishing it on and off for 20 years!?! To get a 9.89...and have be on a rat, and get her in the boat behind Cameron was just too good. Cameron and I laughed for an hour, then he hooks one 7.80 and we almost died in the boat. Just cracking up all day about it all. I had to twist Cameron's arm to get back to the dock 5 minutes early. We had a 13" squeaker we wanted to get rid of. We could have pushed 28 pounds or so with another decent fish. Cameron don't mess around, so five minutes early on tournament day, even with 26 pounds in the boat is hard for him to do. Anyway, I got a cool big fish trophy and I haven't won anything, in a long time, so it was cool to win the Big Fish pot at the El Cajon Ford, at least.
