Are Bluegill considered a bait fish?

Bluegill are illegal as baitfish in most of California. I believe the Delta is one exception. As far as rules on Private Lakes, I am not sure, but before you go blabbing about what a great bait they are, maybe take a minute to read the rules at

I pretty sure they are considered a game fish most of the time

Have you ever tried the Castaic Bluegill Swimbait there?

Are you guy's talking about the lakes off of Alton and Barranca? That's right down my alley!, sort of. Everytime I pass those lakes I drool, thinking about fishing them. I stopped by one day to check out the lake across from barns and nobles, you need to live there and have some sort of their permit. I wonder if anyone ever checks? There's quite a few lakes and ponds in the irvine area, but almost all are either locked up, or private; sucks for us.

Woodbridge is mellow, you can walk up and fish, I've never killed it there but my buddies who fish there a lot have got some good fish. I wouldn't put it on my top 10, but if you live close, fish it!

Rick, there are a few sick places real close to Irvine, takes some work to find and fish them, but they are there! Think the canyons, check your Thomas guide, I'll get in trouble if I spill the beans- e-mail me if you want.

I fished Woodridge for the first time this past spring. I fished it twice and the first time it was cold and storm was moving in. My friend lives out there and he's largemouth fanatic.

I fish freshwater bass about 20 times a year but I'm on the Ocean every week fishing inshore or offshore. I guess it was my lucky day because the first time I fished it We had a total 9 bass in two hours of fishing up to 4lbs. I had eight of those fish and smallest fish was caught by my buddy. Plus I got the into a monster blue gill bite with all the fish going well over a pound. All fish were released and no exageration on the size of these things. I've been fishing over 20 years and these where the biggest gills I've ever caught. I had one that was over two. I thought I had the world record absolutely phenominal. I had to fish this lake again and that's exactly what I did the following week. Fished it for three hours for 12 bass up to 7lbs with trophy fish that made some spetacular jumps for us and unfortunately spit the hook the process. My buddies and I estimated the fish to be 8-10lbs and I thought that was a fair guess. This is an awsome little lake with quality fish. I will be returning to fish with my buddy this comming year. The only reason I didn't fish it more is because I was involved in a major project at the office which left me with no days off through out the summer. I lost almost the entire season this past year. It was a bummer but this comming season I will be making up for some lost time. Good luck

Jerryg

Woodbridge, either lake, can be pretty good in the winter. I have a few buddies who live there and I get out there a few times each winter. The main bite for the good quality fish is on the jig and the Rat-L-Trap. There are isolated rock areas that start near the bank and tail off into the lake. These rocky areas, as well as the dock pilings around the gazebo on one lake, and the restaurant on the other lake are good areas to slow crawl a jig and pig. The Rat-L-Trap should be retieved slowly, letting the bait hit bottom and with the rod tip, lift it up and continue the retrieve. The rocky areas once again are the best for this technique. Be warned, there are some real good quality fish in these small lakes. My buddy Rusty schooled me last year with two stout five pounders in a row, and I've seen pictures of several fish over 8.

I have fished them both a few times and have scored bass up to 4 pounds on 'crawlers, plastic worms, rattletraps, 'blades and flylined 'gills. It's a private lake so dfg doesn't apply as far as I know. The guard guy does come around asking for your association key. I have several friends living there, so no prob for me--just don't live near anymore. There is/was a confirmed 8 pounder in the north lake, put there by the tennis pro after he caught it at Tewinkle.
