It's been pretty rough lately as I'm currently taking a full load of extremely compressed 6 week (normally 18 week) winter intersession classes plus work. Anyways, I finally get a break and have some time away from the "real world." Which means no more thinking about my second set of midterms when class just started 2 weeks ago.. just think fishing!

So I call up Tsunami to go fishing he's like the 1000th Brian here in Calfishing so I'll call him by his nickname =). He was kinda busy but had a couple hours off, which meant that we weren't cruisin down to Perris or anything like that. So instead, we settled for some puddle fishing.. OH YAY! :/ Fishing is fishing I guess.. and it's much much much better than studying or working thats for sure!

So now the question was where to fish? We get on the puter and do a quick search on Yahoo! and fortunately found a couple local O.C. spots. We couldn't make up our minds as to where to go, so we just threw a dart at the dart board and off we were to this little park somewhere in O.C..

We get there in the mid afternoon hours and scope the so-called pond. "Hmmmm.. it doesn't look much like that beautiful picture on the website does it? and boy is it puny.. look at all them barbeque'rs and picknickers and exercisers... ooh and those kids throwing rocks and trash in the water... and that dude casting a 10 pound shot putt on a 5 foot tuna stick.. oh boy! we're truly in fishing heaven!-- bah..no big deal.. Lets just fish!!"

We start off with finesse jigs and managed to yank out a couple fish.. We'd pull em out of the water and say "awww look how cute that thing is.." They were nothing but shorties. The water was kinda dirty but not freezing, probably because the pond was so ridiculously shallow and it being a warm day. We do a couple laps around the pond casting here and there and finally chill out on a little bench situated on a point. The sun is now pretty low and we're just shoot'n the sh*t.. I decide to tie on a slammer that I just got from BWW to see how it swam.. (btw.. thanks CJ for that exchange!)

I cast the "nun-chucks" out and continue on with the conversation with Tsunami.. After a couple winds I see a huge swirl where my line disappeared into the dingy water and Booya! there's suddenly nothing but tugging weight on my rod.. Shocked and completely taken off guard, I wind recklessly faster and harder--mindlessly bulldogged the poor thing in.. I just thought to myself "I have 20# triplefish camo on with the drag buckled all the way down and besides.. how big could this fish really be anyways??"

It felt pretty good and fought pretty hard in the begginning but it was just weight after that.. and it never really broke the surface either. hmm.. might have been the reckless style of fishing I was demonstrating to Tsunami.. =) I would "highly" not recommend the "bulldog technique" (most of you guys probably already now this..) ..I later found out that I almost ripped the hook out as it was barely hooked on the front trebles.. =) Another lesson learned. Thx fo' da extra hand Tsunami!

Anyhows.. here's the result seconds later:

http://www.calfishing.com/dc/user_files/681.jpg

Not exactly a trophy class fish but pretty surprised to catch something this big under the conditions--especially in such a tiny little pond.. on a slammer.. I definitely wasn't expecting it. We had a pretty good laugh after that too. It was hillarious! I guess I might be taking a couple more "bait-testing" breaks to this lil puddle from now on.. just to see what else swims under that murky wattah =). SHAKA!

Nice! Got an official weight? Slammers can do some damage in ponds like that where the fish aren't used to seeing meals that big. They'll get stupid on em sometimes.

Yeah, we fished jigs for the most part of the day (mostly Yamamoto hulas and skinny bears).. just dragged em on the bottom and hopped them throught the leaves. We managed to pull in some shorts this way but nothing else really..
I also casted the rago (flat top version) a couple times but being that it is a little heavier than the others and a tendency to nose dive, I had to reel a little faster to prevent picking up leaves n twigs n stuff.. I'm thinking about putting a couple weight in it so it will sink horizontally.. I really want to try out that sidewinder on the next visit.

Good job again Evan on that fish, kinda funny, that pond is really really small and weve always kinda known about the place but we never fished it. I was telling Dakine just before we fished that place that i walked into a sportmart and up in the tackle section there was a few pics of some guy w/ some good fish, when i looked behind the counter i was suprised that it was the guy working. After a little conversation and some exchange of some spots, he let me in on the place and we decided to try it. Like Dakine said we got a pretty good laugh when we got there and especially after. Over all it was some fun fishing. You just never know and you can never judge a spot, cuz you never know........ Good fishing to everyone.

Oh man! You guys and ur big baits! Nice job. This is my lake though, all u bass guys hit it hard after one report; I go there all year and pull em out. This is a little early for the rush, however your post will prolly bring on the 20 + fisherman days at my tiny little lake. Attention other bass anglers ----this action isnt normal for the lake---. Early season is when the big ones eat, the action will die off due to tooo many lures in the tiny lake.Best stuff for this lake is slow fished plastics for littleones all year, bigger fish come off spinnerbaits for me. Good luck to all Im sure ill see u there!!!!!

Gawd.. I knew I should have never ever started this thread... but being that it's been sounding a little slow everywhere lately my point was not in bringing the spotlight to anywhere in particular.. but simply not to overlook the little "trout planted" local spots in your areas..

So if you have "your own" puddle nearby that HAS NOT been planted with trout lately.. hit it up with a good imitation.. and maybe you won't have to go anywhere else... Besides, there's this short fused guy that I've seen who fishes the spot regularly along with his 500lb pitbull and well.. nevermind. ;)

Just don't go and rape the poor place, especially out of respect for those who live nearby and who've been fishing the place regularly for the past who knows how long.. those who know the spot know that it could only handle a couple people fishing it at the same time.. and for those who didn't--well now ya know!

Being that this is a message board.. I should have known better.. but to the credit of the members here who seem to be at least somewhat responsible, I don't mind sharing a little.. gotta give a little to take a little.. anyways.. much apologies to the guys down there.. didn't mean to drop the dime on your spot..

That is an awesome puddle-fish.
There is a pond in a park in north OC that is only open to kids and adults accompanying kids. No lone adults are allowed to fish. I noticed that it showed up on the DFG plant list a month or two ago. I had never seen it on the list. I've also heard that there is bass in it.

Last weekend my son and I were on our way home from BWW, and we stopped to eat our El Conejo lunch (Across the street from BWW, great mexican food.) at this park. It was the same madhouse as DaKine described at his pond. I was imagining the splash that a couple of 12" castaics would make in the center of that pond. After seeing the hog that you caught, I think we'll try some slammers in this pond on our next trip to BWW.

One night I threw a 9" AC Plug out of pure frustration on a very small South OC bathtub, errr... pond- this little cement craphole has never seen a trout, but the first cast surprised me with an aggressive little one pounder jumping on the plug, and about 10 minutes later a nice 4.5 crushed it, very nice surprise- a big lazy meal is all those fish cared about, they don't have to be trained in trout eating to jump on your big baits.

No worries about exposing the spot. Ive hit this lake up about 50 days a year for 4 years. The rush started 2 years ago with clear water and a good spawn. It tapered off last year after the spawn, the clarity was about 6" and no bedfish were visible. During the summer of 2001 bluegill were spawnin everywhere, however in 2002 poor bluegill spawns(virtually non existence) cut the bass chow off in this lake now it is in a decline .Im trying to get it stocked with panfish or shad, definitely not trout(brings around the wrong mentallity), but i should prolly start a petition.
You guys should lemme know what u guy want and i will start a petition.

Well, I can tell you about one little puddle in LA that probably doesn't have any fish... and that's
Macarthur Park. I went by there after work one day and checked it out (I work in downtown LA)
and that place was putrid... I could see the bottom along the banks and it was full of trash and
what not. No signs of any vegetation not to mention fish... and the smell was horrible.

I wonder if Echo Park is any better. Seems to me they actually plant trout in that little urban pond.

SJ: I've never fished Echo Park but I've heard some good things about the lil urban pond, I've been told that there are some decent sized fish in there.. so I might check that spot out one of these days..

... then again, I've also heard rumors that there have been all kinds of murder victims pulled out of there (Lunkers! j/k).. quite regularly too.. so I'll prolly think twice about it before I make the attempt..

No kidding... I definitely wouldn't go down there at night.... I drove past there once last year and
I noticed a lot of huge plants floating on the surface at one end... you KNOW what went through
my mind...
