Don't fool yourself. When you are out there, you ARE part of the food chain. Here's something else to think about... whales. I've seen video of a grey whale having a blast with a 12' dingey(sp) in the bay there in Ensenada. It was tossing it into the air like a sea lion with a ball at Sea World.

Now THAT would be fun.... THUNK... WEEEeeee!!! splash... :+

But that's what makes kayaking and tubing in the salt so bitchin' in the first place, right? There's nothing like being prey, while you're being a predator! }(

tight lines
Chris

Don't do it! Although the odds are very slim of getting attacked by Whitey, it does happen like that article describes. A most unfortunate event...hard to survive the bite of a big shark due to blood loss as well.

That is really tragic. Does swimming with seals equate to being a lure in a chum line? As for yaks--I heard yellow is a bad color: hence the name "yum-yum yellow" True?

Does anyone know if any kayak has ever been attacked by a shark? I was under the impression that the sharks usually bite people because they mistake us for seals. Ive also heard that we dont taste too good, thats why people only get bit once. Becaue of that its hard to believe that a shark would mistake a large plastic kayak for food.

http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/unprovoked_kayaker.htm

says 5% of attacks on the pacific coast in the 20th century were on kayakers.

The Trail 1 Whites that have been making regular appearances all year made the LA Times today- my buddy got some good footage Friday, you may hear more about these fish soon.

Yeah, they used his footage last night and interviewed him on the news, today Channel 2 was down at Trail 1 and got some great footage of their own, pretty cool. These same sharks have been hanging out down there for the last year. Most are the pups, but the military has some footage of two sharks estimated at 15-17' swimming within 100 yds. of the beach. Grom is right, nobody should surf for the rest of the year! I'll be the human sacrifice and take the next south by myself...

What's up Chris! They had and article in today's OC Register about those sharks...apparently the pups are very docile...just hope mama still isn't around!

Hola Todd! I went down to Trail 1 today, didn't see them in the morning, but my buddy the Media Whore was there all day, he called me and I went back this afternoon and saw two. Super stoked, as I have never seen a white but always wanted to- just not while I'm duck diving! The pups appear to be just cruising, eating bait and stuff- there were lots of terns dipping on the bait, and sure enough they showed up in the chow line. One of the coolest things I've seen, stoked I brought the binoculars to get a really good look.

Cool that you actually saw them! I may have to go there as well since I never saw Whitey in the water although my sister and Dad saw a Huge one years ago on the way to Catalina. I hear some of the surfers are still in the water there too.

Yeah, you suck dude, I went out there but got myself lost and went to the wrong area apparently. I went to the first gate instead of the second gate... Oh well, maybe I'll head back out this weekend, I wanna see one of them suckers.

Brian, the best way to see one is to go to Trail One, and tie a bunch of mackerel to yourself. Swim out about 50 yards and flail around, you should get a good shot at seeing one up close. I'll be on the bluff video taping, I'll split the profits with you when we sell it to the TV stations! They are kind of just overgrown cats, maybe they would hit the Slammer at night?

That would probably attract Whitey...gotta get that guy from Jackass to try that as I sure wouldn't! I also forgot about those Blue Whales that are still around off Dana and Laguna...some unusual stuff right off our waters this year.

Whites are evrywhere. Dont let the DFG full you about any kind of endangered species BS. I've comercial fished salmon out of Bodega Bay for the past 10 years of my life and those sharks are thick out there. I used to cut class and go to Stinson Beach all the time...u couldny pay me to swim out there anymore. 5 years ago people were saying it was to warm for whites past the Channel Islands. Thats BS. Their as far south as La Jolla and probably past that. Have u seen the footage of the shark and surfer at San Onofre. Crazy stufff. No wave is that nice.

They definetly migrate south of SD, look at Guadalupe- they are hanging around the LR boats at all times, I guess quite a few of the marine bios have been down there studying them- there have been a couple of the larger units spotted in LJ this year, one tore up a sea lion (YEEEAAH!) right in front of a lobster guy 1 mile off the Cove. That incident ran through my mind a few times during the board fishing tourney this year, we were fishing in 90' of water outside the kelp beds right off the cove. Although I doubt they would ever bother with a 12' log, doesn't have the profile to match their diet. Still...
