Boat: 17 ft. center console
Water: San Francisco Bay, Delta
Technique: Shallow water striper fishing

What bow-mount saltwater trolling motor is recommended for the following boat and conditions. I'm not seeing too much selection other than Minn Kota Riptide and MotorGuide. 80lb. thrust is essential. A foot pedal or remote is preferred. The Minn Kota received bad reviews on BPS and good on Cabela's, so I'm looking for some more feedback.

Thanks,

Mike F

I am a Minn Kota man. I have owned and used both brands, but none of them have been saltwater models, but my understanding of the saltwater models is that they are just sealed differently that the freshwater models. I prefer the feel, fit and finish and my perceived durability of the Minn Kota motors, I know others will say the same about Motor Guide.

As for specifics I think you should get at least an 80 pound thrust motor for the boat mentioned, maybe more. You can never have too much power, but it is horrible to have too little.

You getting a boat?

Lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what have-yous

Short answer: No

If next year turns out well, that may change.

A colleague of mine in the Oakland office is upgrading his 17ft. center console for Bay / Delta striper missions. He asked me to do some research before the linesiders start invading the Bay.

I use the standard Motor Guide bow mount on my boat with no problems. I wash it when I get back and make sure to keep the bearings greased. I also wipe the shaft down with WD40. I used my old motor for 2 years and had zero problems. I have used my new motor all year now with no problems so far.
