#14666, "Newport & out front Fred Hall Weekend"

Woke up at 1:50 AM Saturday morning to leave for a run down to Newport to Pick up my boat at my dealers yard. Took it over to the dunes for a solo Bay trip. I cleared the bridge just before sun up.

I was going to experiment with shooting video while I fished by fixing my camera to the T-top. It actually worked fairly well but I only ended up with 1 fish on camera due to limited recording time. I can make it better next time now that know how that set up works.

I started off throwing the spinnerbait as it got light. I was working docks in high tide conditions with very little tidal movement or wind. The water was also fairly clear and not the off color I was hoping for. Early on I lined up about 4 pilings and was bringing the spinnerbait right along the ends. It comes by the first one, nothing. Comes by the second one, right in the spot you expect to get ripped, I got ripped, uh actually it was more of a mugging, followed by a severe beat down. I get crushed by this thing and it’s SOLID. I get a couple good winds on it and it kinda coming to the boat, but also heading for the next piling. I shifted my rod to a different position and got it’s head turned, just then it simply opened it’s mouth and out comes that spinnerbait clean as a whistle. I didn’t get a very good look at it but it was a good one. I screwed up and deleted the video clip that shows the mugging. Needless to say I was slightly unhappy.

The following clip is a fish about 15 min after I got bit the first time. It’s funny after that first bite I pulled the Mike Iaconelli imitation on the audio, but at least I didn’t call it a giant like he does. It ended up being a squeaker tournament fish (13 in.). It bit the spinner bait on the drop as I was flipping the docks and pilings. If you listen close you can hear my click the reel into gear just as I’m getting bit.

I ended up with another short fish from this area.

Then went looking for better water. Struck out at about 4 or 5 spots then went back to the spot that we fished in the SWBA Newport event. I switched over and started chuckin the 4 inch Big Hammers in sexy smelt on a chartreuse 3/4oz. head. Go into fish pretty quick. No slugs but I had 4 more tournament fish and 2 more shorts in the next 2 hours. It was a super fun swimbait bite. I quit when I got the fifth good fish about 12:30.

From there it was off to long beach the Fred Hall show to work the Hammer booth till 9:30. Saw a bunch of people and help hook everyone up with some sick baits. I was dragging by the time it was done. Then I’m back to Newport and in bed about 11:00.

I’m up at 5:00 which was really 4:00 due to daylights savings time. Meet my dad and his buddy Roger to go fish bazz on the outside. We started off fishing in tight for a few Calicos and later worked some structure for some Calico, Sand Bass and Chocolate’s and a pancake flatty. All those fish came on 6.5, 5.5 and 4 inch Hammers in redrum, Christmas tree, clear red and blue shad with Pro-cure Calico Cocktail. It was never wide open but it was a steady enough pick bite to keep us interested. Roger hooked a huge bat ray that rocked his world. Fortunately he had it on 65 pound braid and could put the wood to it, but it got around a lobster buoy and was pain. On the way back in the harbor, I asked the boys if they wanted to take a shot at that spotty bite from yesterday. My dad was game and roger had never caught one. So off we go to the spot. I had one four inch sexy smelt left and one silver phantom, so I gave those to Roger and my dad. I fished the redrum which I don’t usually throw for spotties. It get bite by a decent tourney fish within about 5 minutes. I started coaching Roger on where he should throw it and how to retrieve it.

Meanwhile, my dad who has fished spotties before gets railed by a chunky one. It was one of his biggest spots ever and he was stoked.

Now I’m working on Roger. I stopped fishing so I could just run the boat and I put him up on the bow. After more failed attempts he finally gets a good cast way down the dock. I’m like, point your rod tip over there and grind that back right along the dock. He finally put it all together and sure enough, he gets bit, he goes ”there it is” and I'm like, yep, there it is. About a 14 incher and one stoked angler.
