Hey Calico, where do you fish in the bay? I used to fish a lot there from the skiffs till they raised the price. Do you fish for spotties? I don't think i'll be able to make it this weekend but i'm going to start fishin there more often. I usually fish the wall. Give us a report when you get back.......

I fished it from Kayak This past Sunday. I fish during my lunch hour each day for about a 30min or so. The water is unseasonably cold. There are some large schools of bait that have been haning in the channel entrance to the harbor but the cold water has put the freeze on the bite. It's been very poor fishing. I hope we get some good weather soon. Good luck.

I usually take the ferry across to Balboa Island and fish around pilings looking for bass. Most of the catch around the docks is spotties with a few sandies and some decent halibut.

Will do Calico, Hey do you have a Truck? I have a boat with nothing to tow it with. I like to fish fresh and salt bass, I would be on the water more but my truck is a P.O.S and has a hard time towing itself..............

I got down to Newport today for a few hours. Worked the surf near 15th street with mussels and lugs for nothing but a few small bites, then hit the harbor for a few perch and 1 12" sandie on the leftover mussel. Water was very cold but still clean considering the rain yesterday. I haven't fished the skiffs in a while but have still had pretty good luck out there this season so far.

If your going to fish from the skiffs you need a few things to almost garantee a successful day, unless the wheather is just horrible. A few four in shiny deep running rapalas for trolling, silver or gold is good. A light colored swim bait that looks like a chovy and some 1/4 to 1/2 ounce lead heads. And the last thing you need is some live bait hooks if your going to drift the chovies. I think the best spots are close to the the pavilion right around the boats. If I'm trolling I just cruise along the boats on the inside of the harbor. If I want to through swim baits I'll usually go in-between the boats and tie up to one of the bouys. Then just the cast out, let the bait hit the bottom and retrieve at a medium pace keeping the bait pretty deep. Or you can bounce it off the bottom. Good luck, It'll be wide open in a month.
