The person that made the original tripple trout, who lives in Nagoya, Japan, feels the same way about copies.
I have the first tripple trout that was ever made. The second was sent to Cali, and an exact copy was made via a silpac silicone mold.
I am not sure that this is the proper place for a "boycott".
It is sad that many choose to copy the hard work of a few.
I happen to know, as I invested $120,000 in the development of the tripple trout and named the company that make it. 22nd Century comes from the Briefs song, 22nd. Century Man.
Life goes on; let just get along and fish.
Just my opinion.
Attached is a pic of the first ever made Tripple Trout, made by N. Hayashi. Hayashi san had me send the bait to Whitmer, and it was copied with his permission, for a lifetime supply of baits. The original one was floating, and was the first lipless hard big bait, as documented in the Japanese media.
Good fishing,
Capt. G

Greg - your post reminds me of the first day I laid eyes on the triple trout. Believe the date was January 16, 2005. Some guy with a fake beard from Japan gave it to me at Lake Del Valle ;-)

In all honesty, I did not understand the potential of the triple trout at that time. I knew it had incredible balance, a radically different action from anything on the market, and a unique swivel based hook hanger setup. But it took me quite a few years to really understand the lure.

It helps to have the occasional chat Scott, who understands the lure better than anyone being as how he makes them :) Scott is still one of the nicest guys in the swimbait deal and he cares very deeply that every lure is made right and fishes right for the guys who buy them. There's a reason they're marked up on eBay week after month after year. I own quite a few triple trout and there is not a bad one in the lot.

Last summer I got my first "big" bite on the triple trout and Nico scooped this 15.25 for me on the 10". I know it won't be the last giant that will eat that lure for me.

http://www.calfishing.com/dc/user_files/6794-tt.jpg

At the same time, you all know that at calfishing I make every effort to review every swimbait out there. It takes time and money, but I will get an Al e Baby sooner or later, and I'll give it a fair review.

I'll get all the 3:16 stuff I can get some day too (once I'm done with school, employed, and have $500 to drop on baits). People don't come here to read plugs for one manufacturer. They come to find out about ALL the baits because they are FISHERMEN who care about CATCHING FISH.

What I wanted to say in my post, is that it would be cool if we all (including yours truly,) concentrated on fishing and postive things, the fishing 'world' would be a finer place. This is what I like about this forum--it is mostly positive.
I am coming out this summer, Rob, and I have some more 'Evil' stuff to give you.
BTW, nice trophy on the TT. I have caught a dozen over ten on the TT, but never one close to 15 pounds. Last winter I took my friend for his first big bait trip to Casitas. He got one bite on the 10 inch TT but it was a good one--a double, the big one going 10.2 lb. This pic was published in one of my articles in a Japanese Newspaper.
Cheers..

All i know is if the Triple Trout isn't available
and the Al-e-Baby is; I will buy Alan's bait.

If they are both available I'll take the triple trouts.

I don't plan on payin ridiculous ebay prices, considering
i can make these baits. I prefer to buy them due to the
fact that the little guys need the money, and i have plenty to
spend on Tackle ho'in and work 60 hours a week, so i just don't
have time.

I need some 8" triple trouts and color doesn't matter.

let me know when performance tackle has some baits. i'll take them
all. :P

nice hog rob, and guy from japan

Wow Taylor, all the years you have posted on here, and read the site. You would think by now you'd get it that jumping on and running your mouth with a bunch of swear words mixed in is not how we do it on calfishing.com???

Think about editing your post. I think your argument will be a lot more convincing without the swear words and ranting.

How are zipper worms different?

http://www.calfishing.com/gallery/v/members/JohnmcNerney/DSCF1567.JPG.html?

At some point it appears to be OK to copy another design, and as far as the Triple Trout goes, that horse left the barn a couple years ago.

On the bright side, I doubt Alan's bait is going to put a dent in Triple Trout sales. People are smart enough to pay for quality baits :)

well zipper worms are not a big deal first off im just making them for myself and secondly im making special colors that you cant buy and third im not claiming mine are better than anyone elses of do anything different than the real thing.. Anyhow i did not know about triple trouts being made in japan first, anyhow i just think if someone is gonna market a new lure under there name they should take the time to contribute something new and cool for the fishing community not something we alredy have

Supply and demand is another aspect to muddy the waters. 22nd century has, for whatever reason, failed to meet demand in the marketplace, by a large margin. If the average fisherman can't buy a triple trout even if they wanted one, it's not so bad for them to get a copy.

The funny part is that the copies are almost always much, much worse than the original. Not being able to come up with a bait as good as the huddleston, even with the bait right in front of you to copy is just weird. Mattlures 10" is the only one hudd style bait I've seen so far that offers worthwhile improvements (albeit not a hudd replacement).

Basically what I'm trying to say here is, I need more swimbaits :)

I'm with Nicco. Nothing will really matter on the copies. It happens time and time again because that's how people are. How about the Sweet Beaver? The Senko? I don't see anybody complaining when they rig up a Yu m Dinger. Quite frankly, Taylor, the copies you and I handpour are illegimate copies, in a sense. Its just the nature of things. The swimbait market is huge now, and people will copy successful baits. The only way to ensure they can't is a patent, and even then Chinese copies will still end up on EBay. People will do whatever it takes to make money on a fad while it lasts, and swimbaits are as a whole considered a fad by many at the moment, though you and I both know they aren't. Why do you think every plastic company has brought out some type of Basstrix style baits? Its just part of a cycle. People will buy the crap baits on an impulse for saving money, realize the copies are indeed crap, and buy the original later down the road. Thats what the people who copy the baits are anticipating; someone will buy that bait on price alone and not performance.

Bass + Fisherman= BAASS ADDICTT!!!

Who looses in all the 'copy' business? Not just the small companies like mine, but the end user (angler).
How you may ask?
There are a lot of great baits that never get introduced into the market because of copy product. When I first gave Rob for free the first couple of Tripple Trout (Marc Higashi named the product), it was so new that even he did not grasp its fish catching potential. As he said, it had a very good swimming action. It is also an easy bait to copy, for many reasons. I and the creator of the product, Mr. Hayashi, debated if we should release the product at all.
The first ones, were of course carved of wood, before we sent the first 'polywood' one to Whitmer to make molds. I must say, that the wood ones are the bomb. Just like the old school wood Slammers, the swimming action and fish catching appeal is unreal. I did not release the wood version, because it would have been easily copied in Japan. We opted to make one out of Urathene 'Polywood'. Rob has one made of the Japanese Polywood, which is slightly different than the USA version. If you would like to see a wood, handcarved, unpainted TT, check out the bottom of my webpage:
www.bigbait.jp
My point is this, I have several prototype big baits that will never be released for this reason that my lawyers advise me that protecting the patents, trademarks, and other related issues would insure that the project (ie.lure) would not be successful financially. Many other makers of lures have lures they will not release.
316 Mickey came to Japan and stayed with me for two weeks. Being the Gentleman he is, he broght me a whole box full of prototype lures he has to this day not released (for many reasons). The lures are unreal; pure evil. I will not even post a pic of them, as I promised Mr. Ellis that I would not.
So, the system is what is is; I have not specific complaints. Let's just get back to the fishing thing and post positive, constructive things.
Oh, and do not bother offering money for one of my wood tripple trouts, any of the 70 plus Polywood tripple trouts in my BB boxes -none are for sale. I think I will have one of the wood ones painted up rainbow trout and give to Rob this summer--he is a man that deserves to fish such a weapon.
Good fishing,
Capt. G:-)

Now thats just plain mean telling us about the existence of such lures and dangling that carrot just out of reach }(

great to get the history behind the bait!

here here! since I've taken up bait making as a hobby the last year I've definitely gained more respect for the masterminds that have spent the time engineering the more forward thinking baits. My outlook has changed from consumer to supporter. If you guys stop to think about it the little boutiques need capital to spend the necessary time to make another bait that hasn't been copied yet...support the boutiques and get in line! stop the ebay inflation..you know who you are!
