Andy,
I figure a serious guy will have at least one of every lure. You never know which ones will be good for you until you try them. Is a Generic Trout worth 100 bucks. To me it is. To the next guy it might not be. Is one bait better than another or better than a different one? Depends what you have confidence in. I personally don't like the castaic softbait trout very much. I had one and I wound up just using the tail for a 12" slammer. But talk to a guy like Fish Chris from Trophy Bass Only about the Castaic softbait, and he catches a lot of good fish on them and likes them a great deal. That's his confidence bait. He doesn't throw the slammer and probably doesn't even own one. But that's cool. My best advice is to buy some baits and give them a try. Learn each one and find the one that gets bit for you.
