#47668, "SCBBBC Classic Report September 24-25, 2016"

First off I would like to thank the SCBBBC club and their officers for another great classic.

Most everyone that knows me knows that this fall Clear Lake tourney is about my favorite one of all, and I love fishing at both State and County parks.

This year I started pre-fishing Wednesday morning upon my arrival at State Park. I fished SP Wednesday in the creek and in front of the campgrounds and Thursday on the swim beach side. I caught a lot of fish but nothing to get excited about. Friday I went to County Park and shook off fish (since this is where I planned I would be) flipping a beaver in tulles, and I caught a couple too. The bite was good and Steve landed a couple in the 4 to 5 lb range. There were decent fish at CP, better average weight than SP, for me at least, but not what I thought would be needed to win.
After fishing at CP we took a drive to look at some other locations.
My final decision, which turns out was the best one I made all weekend, was to not fish at either State or County parks, but instead go to a spot that I didn't pre-fish at all.

Saturday I get in and started fishing about 6:15. I threw a frog and spinner bait in the early morning twilight and caught my first keeper off the end of a private boat ramp on the blade. Small fish, just like the cookie cutters I had been catching during pre-fish, my scale weighed it at 1.75 lbs. My second keeper was the only bite I had on a frog all weekend; 5.5 lbs. Still tossing the blade, number 3 came off a ramp again and was 2.8 lbs. I filled my limit at about 8:30 with a 2 lber and was feeling good.
I continued with the spinner bait and was getting bit but the fish were on the small side for a couple of hours. Then, as I was retrieving the blade under a tall dock the rod loaded up. I thought I had snagged something until the snag started pulling… pulling hard. After a brief but epic fight a 7.6 lber went in the net. Gone was my first, little 1.75 lb fish. Later on I culled the 2 I had with a 2.3 that was under a dock. I caught a bunch more fish after that but none that would help.
I finished day 1 with 18+, the lead, and day 1 big fish also. I was super stoked!

Day 2 started just like day 1. The first fish came from the end of a ramp in the early light, 5.9 lbs on the spinner bait. Just as I netted the fish my bait broke in half at the line tie. I guess I should have replaced the blade that got pretty mangled on day 1 instead of just re-tying, I got lucky! Tie on a new bait and on the next dock pick up number 2 with a 2.2 lber. As I am putting the fish in the live well I see something floating in there. I reach in and pull out a baby doll with no arms. I had a good laugh as #2 went in the tank.
Now I have the ‘baby’ mojo going and know it is gonna be a good day, I could just feel it.
I continued down the bank with the blade and got my third keeper from the next dock at 4.3 lbs. then on the same dock fill my limit with a 3.9. It’s only 7:15 and at this point I’m thinking I have good chance of taking this one. For the rest of the day I pretty much stuck to the spinnerbait slow rolling it from the bank out to the end of the docks and continued to pick up fish here and there. I culled the 2.2 lb fish with a 2.6 then culled the 2.6 with a 5.8 lber at around 10am. I started making my way back to the launch spot fishing all the docks I had fished with the blade putting a drop shot next to the dock poles but caught nothing else to upgrade. At about 11 the wind kicked up and got bad enough that I finished my day early. I got back at County Park around noon and parked in the shade to wait the longest 2 hours ever!
At the day 2 scale I weighed 19.9 something for a 38+ pound total for both days and the 'Classic' win.

This last week was some of the best fishing I have ever experienced at Clear Lake for numbers. The bank I was on was loaded with shad, there were probably a couple of hundred grebes fishing out in the bay and the bass were on the bank out to the ends of the docks gorging on the bait.
I primarily used baits that were shad imitators and the spinner bait was the best producer by far, responsible for every fish that I brought to the scale, but one.

I need to thank my good buddies from BnT… Steve Williams for hanging with me for 5 days at Clear Lake, Sal Castro for fishing with me for both days and Scott and Taylor for the ‘baby’ luck that followed me all day on Sunday.
I also want to thank the SCBBBC for putting on this awesome event, Binh, Jeff, Martin, Wes and Dan for running a smooth weigh in, Marc and Laura for the Saturday BBQ, your efforts are always appreciated, and everyone else who came out to play.

See you at next year’s classic!

MT

Mitch, right on man. Congrats!! Hell of a job this last weekend. You smashed 2nd place and the rest of the field by right around 10 pounds or more. Impressive to say the least. Obviously you made the right decision to fish where you did, instead of where you prefished. That instinct and that decision, is what did it for you, on top of capitalizing the opportunities you had. (It wasn't the baby luck, well maybe a little bit.) The hardest part is the decisions we make, and for this event it two days of the right ones.

Any way man the wins at the Sonoma's classic, BnT Clearlake open, Delta open or any other past history opens are the ones you always remember, so great fricken job!! Well done.

Great job Mitch!!! Congrats on finding the spot and then the fish. What a great weekend of fishing and good ol friends. Don't spend all that money in one place. See you at the next one.
