Bass-N-Tubes: Holland Track
10/22/17
Water temp: 62
Air Temp: 81
Water clarity: Clear
We Launched out of Holland Tract Marina at 6:45am. Was was cold and there was a thick fog that set in over the water. Eerie, but cool. I haven't fished Holland in over 15 years and the last time I did, I was 16. Basically I had no knowledge of the area. I spent some time on google maps and decided I'd head away from the main channel to avoid heavy current. I started the morning on the rip raft wall and was able to pick up my first keeper on a red LV squarebill. The fish hit it immediately.
My next fish was on a senko on the same rip raft wall a few yards down on a isolated tule patch. My third fish came minutes later on a jerkbait. By 8m I had 3 keepers in the livewell and was feeling good. High tide was at 9am, and I didn't get another bite till about 10:30am.
I covered a lot of water before coming back to the productive slough, but fished the other side of it on the way back. The island side of the slough had primrose, and I started by throwing a jerkbait. A few casts in and I got bit. I could tell it was a nice fish but barely hooked and sure enough the hook popped out. Kept going, decided to flip the primrose and got my fourth keeper.
About halfway down the slough I noticed that there was a nice ledge drop off going from 3 to 9 feet. I decided to parallel my jerk bait down the slough. Rip rip pause..boom, a fish smoked my bait. This fish made runs and was pulling like a 6 lber but was just a chunky 3lber. I was stoked cause on a day like today, this fish would be my kicker. It was also my 5th fish.
I get close to the marina and am still working the jerkbait when I get smoked again on this ledge. Another nice 2.5lb keeper and was able to cull out. These fish had packed bellies, loading up for winter. Next cast rip rip BOOM I get hit by a big fish, load up on the rod, have it for a second then pop, the fish threw the hooks. Was bummed because it hit like a mack truck.
By Noon, I had a winning weight of 10.78lbs. For the next three hours I went around throwing a swimbait, a jig, crank and drop shot looking for a bigger bite. I didn't think 10lbs would do better than 5th place, but wasn't able to find any more fish to upgrade my weight. Fortunately for me no one was doing much better and my weight held up to take First Place!
I'm looking forward to Tournament of Champions at Clear Lake next month!
TIGHT LINES!

Great report! Sounds like it was a tough bite all around.
