Hey All,

Been outta touch for a long time. My wife has been fighting the big C and finally kicked it's ass. Just wondering if any of the desert rats have had any luck out there lately. Not looking for locales, I have my own spots, just that if the fishies have woke from there winter nap, tight lines to all.

Dogs rescued from California Aqueduct

PALMDALE - Two dogs discovered clinging to an object in the California Aqueduct were rescued Wednesday evening by the fire department's swift water and urban search and rescue crews, officials said.
A Rottweiler and a German shepherd had floated down the aqueduct at Barrel Springs Road, south of Pearblossom Highway, and became stuck in a whirlpool at 6:25 p.m., said Inspector Jason Hurd of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

When firefighters found that the dogs were still alive and clinging to metal fencing, he said, the search and rescue crews arrived to rescue the pair.

Fire crews utilized inflatable rafts to reach the lodged dogs, Hurd said.

About 45 minutes later, he said, the dogs were pulled out of the aqueduct's strong current.

They were handed over to animal control, Hurd said.

The dogs' owners are unknown, he said.

Would you recommend a wake bait or a subsurface lure for shepards and rottweilers?

Definitely a wake bait with cat eyes and an old school buck tail :7

on that site what he calls a "shad from a stripers belly" is actually a Tule perch. there are Alot of them in there and if you have the means to trap them, thay are great bait!

You're correct about the tule perch. Although you would be amazed at the amount ot threadfin shad on the West side. The closer you get to Quail lake the more prevelant they are. If you go to Quail lake in the fall and walk the bank the water is black with clouds of them.

i live in so-cal and fish the Hesperia aqueduct, about 8 miles before it goes into silverwood. ive gotten a few nice cats and only one striper that went 8"...lol.
ive been wanting to fish Quail lake. is the lake more productive or is the duct leading into the lake a better bet? i prefere to fish cats, but am always up for catching anything else, like stripers or large carp.
ive never seen any shad in there, all we have down this way (that ive seen) are Perch. and very few at that. do you know a good way to capture large perch on rod&reel? i usually use a dip net in the half submerged pipes and get a few out of those, but i usually can only get 3-5 a night...

I've fished that stretch before Silverwood and have managed a few decent cats. There seems to be more bait in the water here out west. Whether it's do to the more shallow sided duct or numerous pumping stations I'm not sure. But I do best in the turbid water before and after the gates.
Have you tried drifting your bait as you walk along the duct. I'll have someone drop me off and walk a few mile stretch drift liver or mackeral. I've found this produces much better for the kitty fish.
I've seen some huge grass carp out this way munching algae on the sides and basking in the sun. The largest stripers I have read about have come outta the duct along I-5 south of Quail lake.

ya i use the waling method. covering about 100yrd stretch then re-walk it, then go a lil futher each time.
the biggest fish ive pulled out was a 28lb channel and the biggest ive seen pulled out was a 58lb flathead, caught on a night crawler of all things.
where is there turbid water on my stretch? and do the fish get sucked in? or do they just wait there for food?
ive seen some sstrange fish in there also..
1) a dead trout...?
2) eels
3) Lrgmout bass
4)and also a fish we couldnt ID. it looked like a small sturgeon (about 3' long) but had a dorsal fin (like a shark) and was just cruising on the surface up stream (slowly). was very cool. but wouldnt take anything we through at it...maybe we should have snagged it, just to see what it was.

Get yourself a good road map that shows the aqueduct. Where it stops and goes under ground there is usually a pumping station. Also you can try Google earth. It is a virtual map you can use to get satellite views. Before the station and where the water comes out are good spots to try. I've never heard of a sturgeon in the duct but since it starts up at the Delta, who knows. My sons and I have caught stripers, cats, and carp.

after chacking some photos of grass carp, i think thats what we saw. it was dark, and some top photos i seen looks pretty close to what i can remember...so there prolly are no sturgeon in there...to bad.

i checked the google maps...is the pump station befeore the "Y" to quail lake fishable?
