Any of you guys going to be around this weekend in SB? I am thinking about hittin up the Starust 1/2 day, most likely on Saturday. I haven't checked what their schedule is yet but I'm guessing it will be open party..

What'd you get dude. Halibut still biting down there ? I heard the weather was like 80 degrees recently. Maybe the calico bite will pick up :-)

A few halibut (shorts) on the shallow minnow baits. A few short strikes on plastic (could be yellowfin croakers). Last Sunday morning the water off the sand bar was really clear - I could clearly see the bottom at up to 15 feet. I got slammed hard on a Rebel Spoonbill Minnow that dives about 10 feet. I was sitting just off the dropoff in about 13 feet. It was a big fish but it came unbuttoned after a few seconds.

A fly fisherman supposedly got a 12 pound halibut the weekend before last.

The water has been sitting at about 55 degrees for the past couple weeks but I'm hoping this week of sun has warmed things up a bit.

Shoot maybe I should pack the tube in the truck. Winter just hasn't come yet down there yet it seems like.
Have you tried gamakatsku hooks at all for those minnows? I am a total believer.

It's not wide open or anything but they are around if you're willing to work for them. I got skunked Sunday but Mike scraped up a 19 incher.

I haven't tried Gami hooks yet because I really like the Perma Steel finish. I find it rusts the slowest of all the finishes I've tried. After a few shots I think I have found the hook for the minnows. It's the VMC 7651 PS.

I guess the gamakatsku hooks would probably rust out pretty quick.
I had another question for you along those lines.
What do you guys do as far as trying to deal with unhooking shorts caught on the rip bait type lures. I have a bad enough time with the single hook swimbaits. I guess you probably just get good at releasing them and carry a long pair of needlenose.
So are you guys going to be out there Saturday morning tubing in the harbor?

You have to be very careful, not only when unhooking them but when fighting them also. I haven't had an incedent in a while so I think I'm learning the tricks but this year I've popped my tube twice, ripped my waders once (by a fish darting under my tube and snagging my leg with one of the free trebles), and snagged the handle on the front of the tube once. Mike actually got hand-cuffed one day one of the three trebles in one finger on one hand and one of the remaining two trebles in one finger on the other hand and the last treble still in the fish. I wasn't there but it was an interesting story.

I have a "plyer-holder" right next to my depth finder holder so my plyers are always ready to just grab. Holding the halibut just behind the head and tilting it a little usually stops them from moving. I knew I was going to release the 27 incher I caught a few weeks ago (it's nice when you have too much fish in the freezer!) so I didn't even use my net. I just grabbed him behind the head and it worked fine.

I'll be out there around 6:30 or 7:00 and fish for about 3 hours. I'll probably start near the wharf and then maybe kick over to the sandbar if the wharf area isn't happening.

That is such a cool picture. That one and the one with the three of us at night are my two favorite float tube pictures of this year. As far as dealing with the trebles, I too stick my pliers in one of my rod holders (that is, if I have room, last time was pretty ridiculous...) so they're always at the ready. For the shorts, I just grab the treble and shake. Most of the time it pops out just fine. If not, you have to grab em on the gill plate or right behind the head (not in their mouth Rob...). I'm feelin pretty good today, I think I'll fish the trailer park tonight and maybe the harbor tomorrow.

It's one of my favorites also. After getting the seabass I was praying I'd catch a legal halibut the whole time so I could get a "double" picture. I got a few shorts including one that was just under 22". I was so desperate for a legal I took that one to shore just to make sure. Mike had already caught 2 legals I believe (to 28") and a few other guys who were bait fishing got a couple. Finally, just before I was going to leave I got nailed in like a foot of water on the Rebel Minnow and it was 23". That little thing in the middle is a yellowfin croaker I fed to my bass (after cutting it up! - although he did eat a mouse a couple weeks ago).
