I've been out recently looking for some of the action. One short yesterday, nothing this morning. Fishing from a kayak with a sliding egg and chovy drifting south of Goleta pier. Anyone with rig/bait/location suggestions?

I think that whole area is holding fish. You just need to find them. People are catching them off of the pier. I would try working in and out. Did you keep trying in the spot where you caught your short? Fished Elwood last week a couple of shorts and 2 legals. I heard that once you find them to keep fishing that area. It seemed to work for us. Good Luck

That is good advice Another Brian about keeping on casting to an area where you catch a fish. I usually start out methodically working in and out and along the bank. When I find the halibut I stay in that general area and usually can catch several more. Often times casting in a particular direction, like up current and between grass beds, will work well. If they keep hitting when I'm casting in a particular direction, I keep on throwing that direction. It may be because the halibut are facing into the current or laying behind grass clumps. It's all about figuring out the "halibut pattern" sometimes. Good places to start at Goleta are in front of the big rock where the cliffs start or straight in front of the stairs from UCSB, but every year seems to have a new hotspot. Let us know if you get them.

If you can try to get some live bait. Usualy live works beter than dead anchovis(use rat traps for dead bait). Also try plastics 3-4 lures work best.I got a 24 in last weekend on a 3.5 in worm king.
