11022, WON Bass Big Fish Derbies
Posted by swimbait, Wed Jan-21-09 07:31 PM
WON is announcing that the Delta and Clear Lake pro/ams scheduled for this year are going to be replaced with big bass derbies. $400 pro entry, $200 AAA entry.

It's still shared weight format, but each boat only weighs one fish per day. Since you weigh one fish each day, you can win two checks if both your fish are in the top 20 biggest fish (assuming a 150 boat field). The paybacks are 1 in 7.5 it looks like.

There's side options for closest fish to 8lbs without going over, the closest total weight (2 fish) to 15lbs without going over, and the usual red/white/blue option.

In other words, I really need to buy a bigger boat :9 More details on wonbass.com later tonight.

From what I have seen on other boards you are the only one that is excited about this format :P

Talk about grumpy huh. Not sure if the people complaining fish WON as Pros or not? I don't know everyone's real name on ncbf. Do know that I fished the Clear Lake WON last year as a Pro and had a real good time. The tourney drew 137 boats. I'd fish it again whether it was for 1 fish a day or 5 a day. I'd prefer 1 fish a day. More my style ;-)

Well so far from other other people I have talked to say is that it comes down to luck. They recognize that it does take skill to catch one big fish, but a guy can chuck a big bait all day and get one lucky bite. They feel that catching 5 good fish requires more skill than catching one big bass. To each his own...thats why I am happy that I don't have time to fish tournaments. Too much drama

If catching big fish is luck so is catching a limit. I mean you can run into a school feeding at any given time right? LOL! What about big limits like numbers the same day over 10? just more luck? There is some luck to ALL fishing. The luck of being at the right place, right time (at first). The luck of the fish opening there mouth to eat. The luck of picking the right bait out of 100 to use and on and on.... We do however put our self in the right place to get lucky, after we got lucky and found the right spots anyway LOL! But that goes for limit fishing too don't you think? The guys that don't like going for one big fish just don't feel they can do it. If it's 1 fish , 3 fish or 7 fish limit it is equal for all right? So what's the problem you feel better with a limit that got you nothing anyway? LOL!

How many times does the top guys in a tourney get there because of a big fish?
It's the same old tourneys just without all the little fish that hit everything LOL!! I bet if ALL tourneys changed over to one big fish the same old guys would be taking your money LOL!!
Everyone just feels better catching little fish that will hit anything. That's why they start tourneys at Lake Mc Clure because you can all catch fish there so everyone is happy LOL!! Nothing like bringing in a limit that weighs 5 lbs LOL!

Thank you God for all the luck.

Hey Jake, Rob, Nico, All of you. You can't fish your just lucky LOL!
All in fun boys.

Don.

Reading the threads on ncbf on this topic is teaching me a lot of important stuff. I've learned that:

1. As we already know, catching big bass is just luck.

2. A non-boater can't learn anything from a Pro who is fishing for big bass

3. No non-boaters will want to fish in a shared weight format for 1 bass per day.

4. Everyone gets mad at the word bloviate because it's a weird word.

Sorry, I can't resist this discussion because it's so funny :) What will be funnier is when the tournaments are held and the same guys come out on top in the standings, and the AAA's walk away learning a ton about big bass fishing.

Really need to work on paving the sideyard this spring to fit a bigger boat.

Yep bass tournament anglers will always whine. Even when things go thier way they will find something else to whine about :P

Another reason why I just fish for myself now :-) I do like to prefish for tournaments. Maybe its just the challenge of finding that good pattern or locating fish.
