I haven't seen a whole lot about fly fishing on the mesage boards but, due to the great responses I have gotten on other questions, I thought I would give it a shot...
Does anyone have any advice on patterns and/or presentations for trout stream here in California? Specifically, I am planning a trip north of LA in the beginning of February.

Deaner There are only a few places close to the LA area that have fly fishing possibilities. One would be the San Gabriel River and the other would be Big Bear Lake. In addition to those there are a number of "pay" lakes where they stock lots of trout that you could probably catch fly fishing if you really wanted to. The San Gabriel from what I understand is a small stream and can be decent for fly fishing. Reports I have read in the past inicated that small terrestrials were good like ant flies, or black knats. Big Bear can have good fly fishign in the spring and late fall. You need a float tube to really do it, but I know that guys do well on wolly buggers and streamer type flies there, usually on sink tip lines. I have been there in the spring though and seen lots of surface activity from holdover trout. There are probably some local favorite flies that could be found at the local tackle shops. If any of you guys know any other areas close to LA that offer decent trout fishing, it would be great to hear about them.

Hi guys,
Rob, I had no idea! Terrestrials, wolly buggers...shoots, I thought you were gonna start talking about 7X tippet, barbless hooks, and $500 reels!
My father is a fly fisherman and active member in the Orange County Fly Fishers Club....I've been to the meeting and know those guys charge all over the North LA area. I know the San Gabriel is definitely a hotspot. Let me do some asking around. Please expect me to post after lunch here. My boss, who is also in the OCFFC, (can you figure out how I got my job?), is a local in those parts.

The place that we plan to hit on this trip is Piru Creek. Thanks for the quick responses. I bragged to my fishing partner that I could get a ton of info from posting here and he doubted me!

If you are interested in driving a bit northeast then head to the Kern. I've always had excellent fishing there throwing spinners and bait dunking but it is definitely a hotspot for flyfishermen in the winter especially. Try the powerplant north of kernville and riverside park. I hear the locals are still catching them despite the diminution of flow. The locals also run a fine webpage that has tons of posts on it. Some of the exchanges are downright funny on the message board.
