What's the best site to get FREE info on ocean conditions for the Monterey Bay area? Bruin and I may go 'yaking this weekend for rockfish before the closure and I wanted to have a clear idea of how good/bad it's going to be.
Tight lines,
Wade

Your thinking of 20+ miles N of there at Ano Nuevo where the Elephant seals breed. Or 40+ miles N by NW at the Farallons where the Sea Lions and Elephant Seals breed. You couldn't pay me to 'yak around there.

Wade

For swell for Monterey Bay up to the Ano Nuevo area look at http://cdip.ucsd.edu/models/monterey.gif.

Wade, I posted this yesterday but it did not "take".

Thanks! That's a pretty cool graphic and makes it look like it won't be too bad out there. From this and what I found at the NOAA site we decided Saturday would be best, but we still haven't figured where we'll launch from.

Wade

Saturday I went Kayaking with Bruin for rockfish. The short version: 7:30AM to Noon, Launched from Capitola Beach by the wharf, Beautiful Conditions, Paddled to the West reef for nothing, Paddled out to 1-mile, Rocked by something big on 30# line at the 1-mile bouy, moved in-shore, I got 1 good sized Olive, 1 undersized Copper, Martin got 1 Copper, 2 Gophers, and an undersized Greeny or something like that.
Kayaking is a great way to fish the in-shore area! I may have to get 1 of these.

Tight lines,
Wade

PS: Thanks for inviting me out there Martin (aka Bruin)! And definitely look me up when Salmon season rolls around.

Wade, take another look at the reply I gave you a few days ago about a NOAA graphic depiction of swell. I just noticed that the graphic is self-updating!

your company was welcome - and you didn't do so bad for a rook! J/K. We could have done better, but we did okay for a slow day.

You were right, I checked the specs on my boat - 87 lbs with no rigging. Add on weight for rudder system, seats, cushions, two sets of tackle, four rods, etc. and we're humping well over 110 pounds of bulky weight across the sand.

Definitely look forward to getting out there for some kayak salmon. I just bought a Perception Prism used from a Santa cruz guy last night for real cheap. Can't wait to get it out on the water, nice boat.

I'll drop you a line when I'm headed out again, keeping in mind that its probably gonna be freshwater for a while.
